Halifax Wanderers To Expand Stadium For 2025

Halifax is a city that has deeply embraced its sporting heritage through the Wanderers Grounds, where sellout crowds have become the normal for Halifax’s Canadian Premier League team.

While the Halifax Wanderers are still pushing for a permanent stadium solution, the club has now confirmed that additions to its existing grandstands will let one thousand more fans into the venue for each and every home match next season – something that will likely benefit the NSL’s Halifax Tides, too.

The expansion will see an extension of both the east and west ends of the main grandstands – sections 101, 106, and 107 respectively – which will add 500 seats in all. At the stadium’s east end behind the net, the supporters’ end will now sport a completely redesigned grandstand that both expands capacity by a further 500 seats whilst bringing fans much closer to the pitch.

In all, the upgrades to Wanderers Grounds will push the stadium capacity up to 7,500, up one thousand spectators from its previous total. The expansion is something the club has considered since their inaugural season saw them become a quick hit in Halifax.

The construction timeline and costs related for the expansion to their temporary grounds have not been defined at present.

The Halifax Wanderers are still hoping their proposed 8,500-capacity permanent stadium will be greenlit by the city. If approved, the new design will feature permanent grandstands, an enlarged FIFA-certified artificial turf pitch with new lights, and upgrades to the venue’s washroom and vendor capacities. The city-owned grounds would also being used for outdoor concerts, community sports, and potentially encased in a bubble for year-round community use.

That all comes with an estimated cost of forty million dollars, however.

The stadium site has historically been used for sports, having been used in the 1880s by the Halifax Wanderers Amateur Athletic Club for rugby and lawn bowling. Before the modern-day Wanderers returned, the land was barren and not proactively utilized.

Whether the club’s proposal eventually makes ground or not, it looks like the Halifax Wanderers have made their move to let more fans in for the time being. If they can continue to sell out with their expanded capacity come 2025, that’ll be more credence in the viability to have a permanent home installed.
