The Halifax Wanderers are bringing in 17-year-old defender Yorgos Gavas for a second time, once again adding the Haligonian teen on a development contract.

The left-footed left-back has yet to make his debut for the east coast side, though it’s clear Patrice Gheisar has been encapsulated with the youngster’s development thus far.

When he arrived last season, the youngster featured twice for the Wanderers Development Team, scoring in a exhibition match against German visitors Holstein Kiel while later playing for local side Suburban FC.

“We have been proud to see Yorgos’ growth during his time in our program and believe he is a young player with high potential and technical ability that fits the type of players we want to be Wanderers,” add Gheisar on the young prospect. “Hopefully, Yorgos’ story can bring inspiration and confidence to other local players so they believe they can compete at this level.”

The youngster isn’t the only player on that kind of contract, with 18-year-old Vaughan product Remi Agunbiade also joining the side this spring. The club can sign up to four players on development deals, and they can each play up to three times – though the club’s press release said eight. We’ve reached out for a clarification.

“We remain committed to investing in young local talent who show the commitments and abilities to flourish in our environment,” adds Wanderers Sporting Director Matt Fegan. “Each season we’ve evolved our development pathways to identify and nurture high potential local talent by integrating them in first team training and development squad exhibition series as we prepare them to take that next step.”

The Wanderers Grounds are expected to be packed with fans this Saturday as the club opens its home account against Atletico Ottawa.
