In Photos: Whitecaps Win Canadian Championship, Again
In addition to our match recap, of Vancouver’s first back-to-back Canadian Championship title win, here’s some shots from the history-making night at BC Place.
The Vancouver Whitecaps retained their possession of the Voyageurs Cup having overturned CF Montreal in a tight and well fought out match at BC Place.
This win qualifies the Vancouver Whitecaps for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup. Montreal Goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois was on form early in the game, making several crucial saves, including a deflected Levonte Johnson shot that Sirois had to kick whilst diving in the opposite direction.
Jonathan Sirois made his first error of the game in minute 58, when Julian Gressel played a long ball over the top to Brian White. Dropping on the edge of the penalty area, Sirois was indecisive, but White wasn’t: he took the ball away from Sirois to slot home into an empty net.
Eight minutes later, Ryan Gauld was adjudged to have been taken down in the box, and converted the subsequent penalty to make it 2-0 home advantage.
In the 83rd minute Sunusi Ibrahim ran through chasing a long ball to squeeze the ball passed Yohei Takaoka to pull a goal back.
Montreal continued the pressure right up to the final whistle, but to no avail, it was Vancouver Whitecaps night to celebrate, retaining the Voyageurs Cup.
