With a rivalry between these two teams going back decades, this match was always going to be a lively affair.
The game started quite frantic, with several sloppy and sometimes aggressive challenges by both teams, as was confirmed with the injury of CF Montreal Captain Samuel Piette in the tenth minute. The game opened up completely in minute 23 when referee Tim Ford showed Rudy Camacho a red card for allegedly pulling down Simon Becher, just outside the box.
It took another 15 minutes for the Whitecaps to open the scoring when Brian White converted across from Simon Becher.
Two more quick goals in the first-half from Simon Becher and Julian Gressel, meaning the Whitecaps finish the half with a comfortable 3-0 advantage.
Coming out for the second-half, the Whitecaps continued the dominance against 10-man Montreal, with two more goals from Ali Ahmed and Simon Becherโs second of the game.
This was the Vancouver Whitecaps first MLS win of the 2023 season, moving them up to ninth place in the Western Conference, while CF Montreal sit bottom of the Eastern Conference.
