It was the first meeting of the season for this these two teams for the traditional Cascadia rivalry.
It was evident from the start that neither team was prepared to concede any possession to the other. The Vancouver Whitecaps looked the most assured up front, but it wasn’t until the 44thminute, when Ali Ahmed’s cross found Pedro Vite in the box. After a brief tussle with Alex Rodan, Vite was able to slot it under Stefan Frei to open the scoreline.
The second half continued with Whitecaps making the majority of the attacking play. In minute 58, Luis Martins went down the left wing and sent a ball into Ryan Gauld, who could only hit the post for the ball to ricochet off Stefan Frei for an own-goal. Despite the 2-0 scoreline, the Scotsman looked less than happy not to have been awarded the goal.
Sounders looked tired and down for the remainder of the game and appeared to have nothing to offer their fans who had made the journey up. This win keeps the Caps in contention for the Cascadia Cup, tied on points with Portland Timbers.
