Inter Toronto 3-4 Pacific: Tridents Prevail In First Half Thriller

The first half at York Lions Stadium on Sunday will be remembered in Canadian Premier League folklore for years to come.

All seven of the match’s goals between Inter Toronto and Pacific came in the opening 45, which felt like the opening 60 minutes. In the end, the Tridents edged the Nine Stripes 4-3 in a memorable game.

It was the second game of the week for Toronto, who was involved in another chaotic clash on Wednesday night in a 3-3 result at Vancouver FC. There were just two changes for the hosts ahead of the match, both coming at the back.

Funny enough, Pacific’s most recent game also came against the Eagles. With coach Terry Dunfield serving the second of his two-game ban, the Tridents went with four adjustments from the 1-1 draw at home last time out.

The first major moment of the contest came in the eighth minute, when Yann Toualy played in Ronan Kratt with an inch-perfect pass. The striker, in on goal, was tripped up by Oswaldo Leon, with the referee pointing to the spot. He also reached into his back pocket to send Leon off for DOGSO. Up stepped Marco Bustos, who converted the penalty beyond Antonio Campos.

However, Toronto tied things up seven minutes later. Ollie Bassett’s corner was initially kept out by Eleias Himaras, but Juan Cordova fired the ball back towards goal. Despite Pacific having players on the line to temporarily keep the ball in play, Frank Sturring was left wide open to put it in from close range.

Things got even better for the Nine Stripes, as Sturring played provider in heading the free kick back across to Luca Accettola, who stooped down to find the bottom corner.

It took the Tridents a while to get going again, as the home side looked the more confident one for a bit of the opening half. With less than five minutes to go, things changed quite quickly. Bustos’ free kick was finished by Taras Gomulka, who had just came on moments prior.

Moments later, Pacific retook the lead. Keeping their strong momentum, Christian Greco-Taylor tried his luck from distance, but instead, his shot turned out to be a pass to Kratt. From point-blank range, the latter finished, giving Campos no chance.

The drama seldom ended there, as Sturring was brought down by Sami Keshavarz. While the referee did not initially give a penalty on the field, Mauro Eustaquio requested a video review, which was won. Up stepped Bassett, who had his midweek penalty saved. That was not the case this time, with the midfielder calmly striking it into the top corner.

The first half went up to the 60th minute, given the continuous stoppages. That allowed for Pacific to get another chance from the spot. Kembo Kibato was caught handling the ball, denying a shot on goal. He was only booked this time, but more importantly, Bustos stepped up again and scored.

Inter went into the second period trying to level the game once again. They were unfortunate not to early on, as Steffen Yeates’ effort whistled just wide of the post.

Pacific thought they scored a fifth as Diego Konincks headed in a Bustos cross from inside the six-yard box. The referee initially gave a goal, but consulted the monitor and ultimately called it back due to a double touch from the corner.

Bustos had the opportunity to complete his hattrick inside the final 20 minutes, but he could only shoot his attempt wide of the mark.

In the end, the Tridents were able to hold on for all three points, winning for just the second time this year. Their other victory, which was against HFX Wanderers last month, also ended 4-3. Their next game will take place in Quebec versus Supra as they will once again try to play spoiler.

Toronto stays in seventh, as they are now winless in their last three (0-1-2). Next for the Nine Stripes is a home clash with Cavalry as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Inter did a great job not looking down a man for the majority of the game. With only 5 games left Inter’s season is likely done. They really did a poor job of capitalizing on a bunch of games in hand and a favourable schedule to end the season.
The talent is there in the squad but it was imbalanced in it’s composition. Defensive gaps and errors have killed their season.
Don’t think Leon is the player they need at the back anymore but you’re stuck when you have so few options.
Don’t know how Eustaquio avoids the axe. Unfortunate because he does have promise as a coach.
