Rumour: Ariel Almagro Linked With Inter Toronto Transfer
The next international signing of the Inter Toronto FC era could be approaching: reports from South America have now linked Ecuadorian winger Ariel Almagro to the club.
MachDeportes reporter Paul Encalada claims the 24-year-old has committed to an Inter Toronto move set to take place upon the expiry of his contract with Ecuadorian top flight side SD Aucas. His contract expires at the end of the month.
This would mark Almagro’s first time playing abroad and would come right after his first campaign with SD Aucas, where he racked up 27 appearances – mostly off the bench – adding two goals and three assists.
Fans keen to see what the prospective signing has to offer take a look at last season’s highlight video below:
Almagro had remained in Ecuador’s top flight this season by jumping from a relegation-bound Cumbaya FC at the end of last year. The midfielder had tallied 51 appearances for the side, scoring five goals along the way.
His youth career saw him venture around the proverbial block in his native Ecuador, cutting his teeth with the likes of Norte America, Universidad Catolica, CD America Quito, and Atletico Kin.
Inter Toronto FC kicked off its new era with a statement signing in former CPL MVP Ollie Bassett, with its subsequent roster update revealing plenty of movement in midfield: the club cleared out space on the left flank with Massimo Ferrin’s departure, while the attacking midfield space sees Adonijah Reid departing and Leonel Lopez’s contract set to expire.
Almagro was exclusively used as a left winger by Aucas this season, though the 24-year-old can be fielded on either flank or up the middle. Adept with both his left and right foot, he’s certainly a versatile-looking attacker on paper.
While Paul Lupez Encalada looks like he has a good track record for his reporting, it’s worth noting that he said the midfielder was locked in with York United, with news of the club’s rebrand to Inter Toronto FC evidently not reaching Encalada yet.
Conversely, another journalist is reporting that the midfielder is en route to Major League Soccer, though this wouldn’t be the first team a CPL team was mistaken for an MLS move.
