With Inter Toronto Football Club set to kick off in a few days, the club has made a late preseason pivot to bring in an experienced option between the sticks – and it’s a name who will be familiar to fans.

The Canadian Premier League side has confirmed that Mexican goalkeeper Diego Urtiaga will rejoin the club for a second consecutive loan spell from Atletico San Luis, putting him between the sticks at York Lions Stadium through to July 17, 2026.

Barring an extension of his stay, Inter Toronto will then continue onwards with a young goalkeeper tandem of Ivan Pavela, Antonio Campos, and Michael Williams for the remainder of the season.

The 27-year-old Urtiaga had spent last season with Inter Toronto, then known as York United, racking up eight clean sheets in 24 appearances throughout all competitions.

Following the conclusion of Inter Toronto’s season, Urtiaga returned to Atletico San Luis and played one match with the U-21 squad in January.

“Diego is a goalkeeper who knows our environment and has already shown what he can bring to this group,” says Inter Toronto boss Mauro Eustaquio. “He gave us consistency last season and stepped up in important moments. Having him back gives us continuity and competition in a key position.”

Inter Toronto isn’t the only CPL side entering the season with four goalkeepers in the squad, with Vancouver FC adding a fourth in Henrik Regitnig last week.

Urtiaga has plied his trade with Atletico San Luis since joining the side in 2019, having progressed through the Club Nevada youth pipeline beforehand. He’s made twelve appearances for the senior side, more routinely featuring with the reserve ranks throughout his career.

The Mexican shotstopper arrived to Inter Toronto’s camp last week, giving him a short window to get back into the swing of things. Inter Toronto kicks off its ‘26 campaign at home on Saturday, April 11.

After an ambitious offseason, the club brass will be expecting to lock in one of the four playoff spots to mark the side’s first campaign of its Inter Toronto era.
