League1 Canada Men’s Review: Week 9
By There were plenty of great matches in League1 Canada play this past week as we near the midpoint of the 2025 season. None of the leagues have a runaway leader, which will make things intriguing over the next few months.
After another week of pro/am football, Northern Tribune is back to provide a recap of everything that took place. This piece will focus on League1 Canada’s men’s leagues. However, if you are interested in reading the women’s review, that can be found here.
League1 BC: Langley Jumps Ahead After Beating Rovers
There was a changing of the guard in League1 BC last week after five matches took place. Things kicked off on Wednesday as Langley United came out on top in a dramatic 3-2 win against fellow new club Evolution FC. Despite throwing away a two-goal lead, Shahbod Jafary got the winner in the 92nd minute to make Langley victorious.
That took us to Saturday, which had the week’s other four clashes. A pair of late markers helped Altitude beat Nanaimo United 2-0, while Vancouver Whitecaps Academy (over Kamloops United) and Burnaby FC (at Unity) also prevailing by the same scoreline.
The match of the week saw Langley United follow up Wednesday’s victory with a commanding 3-0 success over TSS Rovers. Brody Thomas scored a brace late on to give his side two wins in the week.
Langley jumped in front after collecting six points in four days. TSS Rovers and Burnaby constitute the chasing pack, as they look to keep pace with the expansion outfit.
Wednesday will have the most important game of the week, as Langley welcomes Burnaby. After that, Saturday has two matches, starting with the Whitecaps Academy hosting Evolution. Burnaby will also be in action as they welcome Nanaimo United. Sunday completes the round as Altitude takes on Kamloops.
League1 Alberta: Edmonton Teams All Victorious
It was a great week for the Edmonton-based clubs in League1 Alberta, as all of them came out victorious. Tuesday’s lone game, however, saw Calgary Rangers earn a 3-1 win over Callies United. Three different scorers contributed to the new team picking up three points.
Three of Friday’s four contests ended with the away side celebrating. Calgary Blizzard’s Efe Edolu-Joshua scored a 65th minute winner as his side topped Calgary Foothills 2-1. After that, a goal frenzy of a first half helped BTB Academy edge the Rangers 3-2.
Rilind Idrizi and Habib Assem scored for Edmonton Scottish in the final 10 minutes to beat Cavalry U21 2-0. As for St. Albert Impact, they completed a 7-0 result away to Callies United. A 17th minute red card for the home side opened the floodgates for the Impact. Noah Lechelt found the back of the net four times in the rout.
The Blizzard sits atop the League1 Alberta standings as they approach the halfway point of the campaign. BTB is level on points, albeit with an inferior goal difference, while the Rangers are a point back.
Tuesday’s lone game sees Calgary Foothills meet the last place side Calgary Villains. As for Friday, there are only three matches this time around, as the Villains meet Edmonton Scottish, the Impact hosts the Blizzard, and Callies United battles BTB.
League1 Ontario: Scrosoppi Comfortable In Cup Win
The quarterfinals lineup in the L1 Cup is now complete. Scrosoppi took the last spot on Monday with a 3-0 beating of Windsor City. Deryn Armstrong scored the first and third goals of the game to help his side advance.
Next for Scrosoppi in the tournament will be North Toronto Nitros. Simcoe County Rovers faces Championship club Unionville Milliken, while Woodbridge Strikers has FC London and Vaughan Azzurri meets Burlington.
League1 Ontario Premier: Alliance Finally Stopped
We were treated to six matches in League1 Ontario’s Premier Division last week, starting with Wednesday’s clash. That ended 4-1 in Alliance United’s favour over Sigma. Saturday had the biggest game of the round, which ended 2-1 for Vaughan Azzurri at Scrosoppi. Sigma then lost again, 3-1 to North Toronto Nitros on the road.
All three of Sunday’s results ended 1-0 to the victor. Jalen Watson got the only goal for Oakville SC in their win over Simcoe County Rovers, while Burlington scored in the 14th minute in their defeat of FC London. The day ended with Woodbridge Strikers leaving it late to hand Alliance United their first loss. Anthony Morano grabbed the winner two minutes from time.
Alliance still remains in front, despite Sunday’s defeat. With many teams having one or more games in hand, we will get a better appreciation of where the title race stands when those matches are played.
The next week of play will have a double gameweek. Scrosoppi’s clash with St. Catharines Roma Wolves on Wednesday highlights the midweek action. The defending champions will then be back at it on Sunday when they face leaders Alliance.
League1 Ontario Championship: Sudbury Grinds Out Win
The Championship Division had just five games last week, starting on Friday night. At Mattamy Sports Park, North Mississauga continued their promotion push with a 3-1 defeat of Windsor City. All three of the host’s goals came in the opening half.
Saturday started with a back-and-forth contest between Pickering and Whitby, which ended 2-2. Both sides led, but failed to hold on for all three points. Sudbury Cyclones came out on top in their key game, beating previously-unbeaten The Borough 3-1 at home. As for York United Academy, a 94th minute penalty saw them past Master’s FA 1-0. Unionville Milliken completed the week on Sunday with a 2-1 success over Waterloo United.
There is a little bit of daylight at the top now as the Cyclones holds a three-point gap over North Mississauga. The Borough and Master’s are both on 13 points, the latter having played a game more.
Midweek play will feature an important clash for promotion on Wednesday, as North Miss takes on The Borough. As for Sudbury, they will have perhaps the most important match on the weekend, hosting Guelph United.
League2 Ontario: Rush Canada Closing the Gap
There were 10 games in League2 Ontario last week across the three conferences. In the Northeast Conference, Simcoe B topped Pickering B 4-0 on Wednesday. The other two clashes came on the weekend. Saturday had a 2-2 stalemate between The Borough B and Alliance B, before a 6-5 result on Sunday, going Sudbury B’s way against Master’s B. Josiah Stone, Joseph Martins, and Sam Howards all scored braces for the home side.
In the Central Conference, Tuesday’s lone encounter ended goalless between Scrosoppi B and Burlington B. On Thursday, Woodbridge B edged Sigma B 2-1, while Oakville B topped North Toronto B 1-0. Rush Canada topped things off on Saturday with a 3-1 success over North Mississauga B, with three different players getting on the scoresheet.
The Southwest Conference started off with Waterloo B beating Hamilton United B 2-1 on Tuesday. Wednesday saw Railway City come from two down to draw 2-2 versus Guelph B. On Saturday, Windsor B topped FC London B 2-0, with St. Catharines B claiming a 3-0 success over Railway. The visitors failed to convert a penalty early on, conceding thrice in the second half to fall to defeat.
That win proved to be key for St. Catharines B, as they are the best team not leading their conference. As such, they would currently join Cambridge United, Burlington B, and Vaughan B in the playoffs, as things stand. Still, most teams have seven games left, so plenty can change.
Railway and Cambridge will be back in action on Saturday. The former hosts FC London B, while the latter faces St. Catharines B in a key match. Rush will have a local derby on Thursday, battling Oakville B away.
Ligue1 Quebec: Leads Keep on Changing
The top two divisions of Ligue1 Quebec had every single side take the pitch last week, while 10 of the 16 Ligue3 Quebec sides were also in action. Here is a look back at all of the results in the province over the past week.
Ligue1 Quebec: St-Laurent Makes Statement Win
It was a full slate of play in Ligue1 Quebec last week. Friday started things off with a 1-0 CS St-Hubert win over Celtix du Haut-Richelieu. On Saturday, FC Laval and Ottawa South United played to a 2-2 draw, with both sides leading at one point. CS Longueuil and Royal Select Beauport also drew that day, with the guests scoring at the death to make it 1-1 in the end.
Sunday saw CS St-Laurent come out on top in dominant fashion, beating AS Laval 3-0 at home. Josue Desire Youta’s fourth minute goal set things in motion for the 2023 champions, who grabbed two more to claim all three points. CS Mont-Royal Outremont capped off the week by defeating AS Blainville 2-1 in their game.
Things are still looking very close at the top of Lgiue1 Quebec. St-Laurent retook the lead at AS Laval’s expense, but CSMRO, Beauport, and FC Laval are all still in the picture. Last year’s winners has two games in hand, which could prove key.
Next week has the all-Laval clash on Saturday, which will undoubtedly be the headline fixture. On Friday, St-Hubert meets Longueuil, and Celtix battles Blainville. Ottawa will face CSMRO in Saturday’s other fixture, before Beauport hosts St-Laurent on Sunday.
Ligue2 Quebec: LaSalle Dominates, Lakeshore Falters
All 24 Ligue2 Quebec teams saw the pitch on Saturday in a full day of play. AS St-Leonard was among the first winners of the day, edging CS Boucherville 2-1 at home. AS Gatineau managed a 0-0 draw against CS Montreal-Centre, while Union Lanaudiere Sud managed a 1-0 success at CS Roussillon, thanks to Anfernee Garcon. AS Brossard finally tasted victory, beating Boreal FC 2-1 at home.
Revolution FC earned a 2-0 result on their travels against St-Jerome, with Panellinios St-Michel topping CS Trois-Rivieres 5-1. Nour Eddine Benamar grabbed a double in that victory. Phenix des Rivieres and Mistral de Sherbrooke drew 2-2 in their encounter, while Lakeshore SC could not find the back of the net in their goalless tie versus CS St-Lazare Hudson.
CSRDP came out on top 4-1 over Chaudiere-Ouest, and league leading CS LaSalle prevailed 6-1 at AS Montis. Loic Kwemi scored a hattrick for the visitors as they continue their excellent start. CS Trident impressed in a 3-0 win over CS Braves Ahuntsic, before CF L’International de Quebec beat Levis-Est 2-0.
LaSalle remains the only undefeated side in the standings, but only sits two points ahead of Revolution FC. Trident, Lakeshore, and Montreal-Centre make up the other playoff spots.
Montreal-Centre will face St-Jerome on Friday to kick off week 10, with Saturday having 10 more fixtures. The game between Panellinios and Mistral de Sherbrooke will be key, as the teams look to solidify a top 14 spot. Boucherville and AS Gatineau will complete the round on Sunday.
Ligue3 Quebec: Longueuil B Stays Perfect
Ligue3 Quebec had just five games last week. Three of these took place on Wednesday. CS Lanaudiere-Nord drew 2-2 with Celtix B in a back-and-forth encounter. FC Anjou prevailed 1-0 at AS Laval B in their game, while CS Longueuil B topped CSMRO B 6-0. Five different players found the net for the hosts.
Saturday saw CS Haute-St-Charles’ Faraja Ndume score a brace en route to his side’s 3-1 victory at Vallee Blizz Or. Fury de Rimouski prevailed in the other contest, also by a 3-1 scoreline, against Chevaliers NDMC.
With less teams in action, there were not any major changes this week in the standings. Longueuil B is a perfect five for five, with Mondial de Riviere-du-Loup, Celtix B, and Senior Venturi also in a playoff spot.
There are seven matches coming up next week in Ligue3. The most notable one will be between top four sides Longueuil B and Venturi, who square off on Saturday. Mondial de Riviere-du-Loup and Celtix B also face off on the same day in another top four battle.
