League1 Canada Men’s Review: Week 2
Things are still just getting started in the 2025 League1 Canada season. There are still a couple of leagues that have yet to commence, while others just got underway this past weekend. Regardless, look set for another thrilling year at the pro-am level in the country.
Here is Northern Tribune’s second recap of everything that took place across the men’s divisions in Canada. To find the women’s review, you can read that here.
League1 BC: TSS Rovers Stunned
The second full week of League1 BC play occurred last weekend, and we have already seen a shock on the cards. That came at Swangard on Friday, where the defending champion TSS Rovers fell 3-1 at home to new boys Langley United. Despite going behind early on, the visitors responded with three goals in 20 minutes – two coming from Joel Badger – to stun the Rovers.
Saturday had two matches, with the earlier game ending in Unity’s favour. The Surrey-based side topped the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy 3-2 away. Victory Shumbusho scored the winner just a minute after the Caps tied the game. The other game on the day saw Kamloops United rally to beat Evolution FC 3-1. A pair of second half goals from the hosts made the difference.
Sunday’s lone outing resulted in a goalless stalemate between Altitude and Nanaimo United. The result gave both sides their first point of the 2025 season.

It is Kamloops who lead the way after the second full week of play. They and Burnaby FC, who was off this week, are the only sides left with a perfect record. But, seeing that only two teams have yet to collect a win so far, it is a rather tight start to the league.
Week 3 of League1 BC goes next weekend, starting with a Saturday triple header. Nanaimo hosts Burnaby, Kamloops takes on Altitude, and Unity battles TSS Rovers. The Sunday game has Langley United facing the Whitecaps Academy. Evolution will have their bye.
League1 Alberta: Rangers’ First Game Ends Level
We also had our first League1 Alberta game of the 2025 season last Friday. There was only one match, taking place in Edmonton. That saw BTB Academy face one of the new sides, Calgary Rangers.
Both goals in the game came just before, and immediately after the interval. The visitors struck first on a free kick from Abel Nesibu. It took BTB less than a minute after the restart to find their equalizer through Tao Hein. After that, neither team could find a winner in a tense second half.
The first full week of action in Alberta does not happen until May 2. That night will feature four games: St. Albert Impact will meet Cavalry’s U20s, Callies United will battle Calgary Foothills, Calgary Blizzard faces off against the Edmonton Scottish, and the Calgary Villains will welcome BTB Academy. The Calgary Rangers will have the night off.
League1 Ontario: New League Season Kicks Off
A week on from the L1 Cup commencing things in Canada’s most populous province, the 2025 League1 Ontario campaign kicked off with league play. The top two divisions saw action, while League2 Ontario did not have any games. Here is a look at what happened in Premier and Championship Division action.
League1 Ontario Premier: Scrosoppi, Vaughan Continue Where They Left Off
A four-game round opened proceedings in Ontario’s Premier Division this past weekend. Last year’s champion Scrosoppi kicked things off with a narrow 1-0 win at Simcoe County Rovers. Omari Cotterell got the winner 20 minutes from time to give his side the victory.
In Vaughan, a four-goal second half from hosts Vaughan Azzurri allowed them to complete an impressive comeback in a 4-1 success over St. Catharines Roma Wolves. That included a double from Ryan Robinson later on.
In London, Alliance United came from two down to earn a 2-2 draw at FC London. The hosts scored twice in six minutes late in the first half to go in front, before Alliance responded with a pair in 10 minutes after half time. Sunday’s only game ended 1-0 in Oakville SC’s favour over Burlington. Tyler Yasaka got the winner just before the hour mark.
Next week will have a full slate of play, starting with a Tuesday night clash between Scrosoppi and Sigma. Saturday’s only game will see St. Catharines battle North Toronto Nitros. Then on Sunday, Simcoe County Rovers faces Burlington, the Woodbridge Strikers will meet Oakville, while Vaughan Azzurri welcomes Alliance.
League1 Ontario Championship: Unionville and North Miss With Statement Wins
The second tier of League1 Ontario also kicked off this past weekend. Things commenced at York Lions Stadium, where York United Academy fell 1-0 to Sudbury Cyclones in a rematch of their L1 Cup game the previous weekend. Brendon Moxam got the only goal 23 minutes as the Cyclones avenged their cup exit.
It was a 3-0 victory for Unionville Milliken at Windsor City. Three different players found the back of the net for the away team as they claimed all three points. Whitby FC and The Borough played to a 1-1 draw as the latter played the whole second half down a man. With that in mind, it is a good point for them.
Friday’s other match saw North Mississauga see off Hamilton United Elite 3-0. It was a three-goal haul in a 15-minute span for the home team as they got the better of Hamilton, who finished the match with 10 men.
To Sunday, where Pickering FC coughed up a 2-0 advantage in their 2-2 draw versus Guelph United. Ayomide Abobare’s first half brace was not enough to give the home team all three points as Guelph rallied to leave Pickering with a result. The other game ended 1-0 to Master’s FA over Waterloo United. A 94th minute winner from Michael Avila did the damage for the Saints.
Week 2 of the Championship Division starts with Whitby welcoming Hamilton United on Friday. Saturday’s trio of games see The Borough battle Master’s, Sudbury meet Pickering, and Unionville face North Mississauga. The round will be completed on Sunday as Windsor takes on Guelph, and York hosts Waterloo.

Ligue2 Quebec: Revolution, Lakeshore Go Two for Two
Although there is still not Ligue1 or Ligue3 action in Quebec, we again got to enjoy Ligue2 play. All 24 sides were involved this time, providing a full weekend of play. Ligue1 Quebec will commence next week.
Friday had one match, where St-Jerome topped Union Lanaudiere Sud 3-1. The visitors did their damage shortly before and after the break to claim all three points. Saturday’s 10 games opened with a 1-1 draw between CF L’International de Quebec and AS Gatineau, where two first half goals eight minutes apart decided the outcome.
CS Roussillon saw braces from Philippe-Alexandre Alaire and Ovidiu Ples in a 5-1 beating of AS Montis. It was also the same scoreline for Mistral de Sherbrooke, who defeated AS Brossard. Levis-Est and CSRDP could not produce a winner as the sides battled it out to a 1-1 draw.
It was a second stalemate in a row for LaSalle as they drew 2-2 at AS Boucherville. Mohamed-Lassidy Youla tied things up with 15 minutes to go, earning Boucherville a point. Meanwhile, CS Trident earned a 4-0 win over Panellinios St-Michel on the road, with a pair of goals in either half. Lakeshore grabbed their second win in as many matches in a 2-0 success over Phenix des Rivieres.
It ended honours even between CS Braves Ahuntsic as they drew 1-1 against AS St-Leonard, while Revolution FC got past Boreal FC 1-0 with a Antonio Donkov goal. Chaudiere-Ouest fell 5-3 to CS Trois-Rivieres in the most thrilling game of the week. Despite leading twice, the hosts could not hold on as a Gabriel Wiethaeuper-Balbinotti hat-trick proved pivotal for Trois-Rivieres.
Sunday’s lone game ended in victory for CS Montreal Centre, as they topped CS St-Lazare Hudson 3-1 away. It was just before the end where things got interesting, as three goals in six minutes produced a fascinating finish. Yet, Montreal Centre held on for the win.
Revolution and Lakeshore are the only sides to have played multiple games and have a perfect record so far. Five sides have four points from two matches, while Trois-Rivieres is on three points, having won their opening clash.
Next week will see a Friday game between Montreal-Centre and Boreal FC, before a whopping 11 matches on Saturday. The most notable clash pits together Lakeshore and Mistral de Sherbrooke in a contest that could prove pivotal to both sides and their hopes of promotion.
