League1 Ontario standout Alex Zis has set sail for the Saudi Arabian third division.

The Scrosoppi FC midfielder finished as a regular season League1 Ontario champion in the provincial pro-am ranks, recording nine goals and a league-high sixteen assists en route to a championship final loss to the Simcoe County Rovers.

He’s now signed a professional contract with Saudi side Wej SC, who rest in Saudi Arabia’s third tier following a brief stint up in the second flight in 2016.

Zis has been an exemplary performer at the League1 Ontario level, guiding expansion side Guelph United to a League1 Ontario championship back in 2021 before jumping to the ProStars and, more recently, Scrosoppi FC.

He won’t be the only Canadian playing professional in Saudi Arabia, with former Pacific midfielder Ahmed Alghamdi playing for Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in the top flight, where Jordan Henderson had a brief foray over the last six months.

Zis had neared professional details in his native Canada after being selected by Forge FC in the CPL-U SPORTS Draft back in 2019, though he never landed a contract with the Hamilton-based club. He had also developed with the TFC Academy as a teenager.
