CF Montreal Lose In Lacklustre Leagues Cup Performance Against DC United

It continues to baffle people how in some games CF Montreal can be an offensive powerhouse, and in some games the team can barely produce anything.

Last night’s Leagues Cup match against DC United was one of the latter.

“We should score, we should win,” Losada said in his post-game press conference after losing against DC United, once again, 1-0 in Leagues Cup action.

Erik Hurtado scored the lone goal in the 70th minute to lead his team to the knockout stage at the Leagues Cup while CF Montreal will have to sit and watch and hope they can beat Pumas UNAM on Saturday.

“We created enough chances and in the second half we dominated to win this game, and their goal is a goal we gave them. It’s unfortunate.”

After not registering a shot in the first half, CF Montreal got their first scoring chance in the 58th minute when Bryce Duke got a shot off from distance but it went right into the hands of DC keeper Alex Bono.

“I don’t believe the team can do more than this – yes, put the ball into the back of the net, but I am very proud of all the effort to create so many opportunities to score so it’s painful.”

Zachary Brault-Guillard came off the bench and had a chance in the 63rd minute, but was denied by Bono.

“We are really creating chances, playing football, and having movement upfront. Unfortunately the final touch and finishing is what we are missing.”

Hurtado scored in the 70th minute off a weird play when Mathieu Choiniere was attempting to head a ball back to keeper Jonathan Sirois, and was shoved to the ground. Hurtado intercepted the ball and scored into an empty net.

Losada was asked about it and said unfortunately it’s things that can happen.

“I don’t think we can blame one player. It’s a team game and we win and lose as a team.”

He was also asked about the lack of efficiency in front of the net and said it is the hardest part of football.

“The players we have aren’t true goal scorers, it’s very hard and they are young with a lot of progression and a lot of talent. Unfortunately in this moment we are lacking in that area.”

Bryce Duke feels like had they capitalized on their chances it would have been a different game.

“With all the chances we had we would have been able to collect those three points,” Duke said. “It is what it is and how the game went and hopefully some things fall in our favor and go into the next round.”

Duke was asked about a silver lining and believes the team is going in the right direction.

“That’s a positive for sure and I felt like we had our opportunities and created a lot of chances. We broke them down and we had some good plays going forward, it’s just that last piece to put the ball into the back of the net – it’ll change the whole game.”

Aaron Herrera didn’t hold back his disappointment when talking about the loss.

“It’s disappointing and it’s another unfortunate result tonight.”

He was also asked about what he thinks went wrong in the loss.

” Tonight they were better than us and tactically they had a better gameplan, we didn’t take our chances and I can’t say we deserve to win tonight.”

CF Montreal will now have to wait and see if DC United beat Pumas UNAM on Saturday and if they do they will finish in second place and most likely a trip to Philadelphia to face the Union a matchup they were trying to avoid.
