The Canadian Premier League‘s former Director of Football – who later worked with Pacific and Vancovuer FC owners SixFive Sports – has begun a new chapter back in Virginia with Loudoun United.

Oliver Gage has been announced as the USL Championship side’s first-ever Director of Soccer, where he’ll be tasked with leading roster management, strategic direction, style of play, and overseeing the club’s technical staff.

“Olly’s appointment represents a significant step forward in our journey towards excellence both on and off the field,” said Loudoun United’s CEO Greg Baroni. “With Olly at the helm, we are confident that the club is well positioned for success in 2024 and beyond. We extend our warmest congratulations and utmost support as he embarks on this new chapter with us.”

Gage was an instrumental figure in helping the Canadian Premier League build upon a Canadian soccer data scene that was still in its infancy when he arrived. He was initially hired as the league’s head of on-field performance and recruitment, creating a centralized player scouting database for CPL sides and ensuring the fledgling league got good bang-for-buck with both domestic and international recruits while also guiding the league’s early salary cap and roster regulations.

His time with SixFive Sports saw him oversee football strategy for both Pacific FC and Vancouver FC, while also working with the company in efforts to expand into Europe and form a multi-club network.

He had also previously worked as an opposition scout for Sheffield Wednesday before his first stint in the US began with the University of Virginia, where his work helped the Cavaliers secure a national title before he transitioned to Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo. There, he helped cement long-term practices for data-driven choices and saw the side collect a US Open Cup.

“I am thrilled to be returning to the DMV and honored to embark on this new chapter with Loudoun United FC,” said Oliver Gage himself. “I am eager to work alongside the talented individuals within the organization to elevate the club to new heights. Together, we will strive to make an impact both on and off the field, creating a legacy of success – and winning!”

He won’t be the only CPL ex-pat to call the club home, with former Forge full-back Kwame Awuah still plying his trade at Loudoun. The club will be hoping for a stronger season than last, having finished eleventh in the eastern conference.
