Macias Expected To Miss Continental Bout Against Forge
When Forge hosts Liga MX giant Chivas Guadalajara this week, the visitors look set to be without centre-forward Jose Juan Macias.
Having been described as the most valuable young forward in Liga MX just a few years ago, the 24-year-old has faced an uphill battle to return to fitness following serious back-to-back knee injuries that sidelined him for 18 months.
His return to action came just recently, with the striker featuring in three straight games to kick off the Clausura season before missing last Wednesday’s match against Toluca and yesterday’s win over Atletico San Luis.
Macias had been listed on the Rojiablanco’s roster list for the Concacaf Champions Cup, but he won’t be the only forward who is expected to miss the first leg in Hamilton: famed Mexican striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez is also listed, but won’t be back from injury till the end of the month.
Macias has procured 27 goals in 90 appearances for Chivas following his debut in 2017, with his national team record seeing him score four goals in five appearances for Mexico. He also underwent loans to Leon and Getafe, cracking the Best Eleven of the 2019 Clausura with the former, for whom he tallied 19 goals.
While Chivas did not state any medical reason behind Jose Juan Macias being off the team sheet, the player took to Twitter to assuage the concern of Chivas fans.
“Within my process of returning to the pitch, I have to manage the loads of my knee so that my body assimilates it better every day,” said the forward online. “But I’m perfect! I send you a big hug.”
It is expected – but not confirmed – that Forge will have added two more names to its own roster for the continental clash, with the hammers recently signing Ghanian international Nana Opoku Ampomah while securing the return of Elimane Cisse, who had won two league titles with the club previously.
However, it is unknown if they will be able to join the team in time for the continental cup match, which will be Forge’s third against Liga MX competition.
Forge is now back in Hamilton after spending the last two weeks in Queretaro, Mexico for preseason, where they faced the likes of third division sides Inter Queretaro and CD Iruaputo, second division side Celaya FC, and Liga MX’s CF Pachuca.
The most important absence for Guadalajara’s next two games is forward José Juan Macías, who will miss three consecutive matches after missing the midweek game against Toluca.
