Recap: Toronto Stumbles At Home Against New York City FC
Toronto FC were back at BMO Field for matchday ten of MLS, hosting New York City FC following their first victory of the season while on the road at Real Salt Lake.
The Reds were in search for their second victory of the 2025 MLS campaign and their first at BMO Field. Toronto are 0-1-2 at BMO Field, playing Vancouver and Minnesota to scoreless draws and losing 2-1 to the Chicago Fire.
Through the windy afternoon game on the lakeshore, however, visiting New York City FC would hand TFC their second defeat at BMO Field this season.
Reds’ boss Robin Fraser began the matchup by making a pair of changes to the last weekend’s eleven side that sought out a win against Real Salt Lake, Maxime Dominguez and Charlie Sharp in the eleven for their first club starts replacing Lorenzo Insigne and Derrick Etienne Jr.
The addition of Charlie Sharp spear heading the attack for the Reds was as Coach Robin Fraser told reporters post game, “it was not determined before, it was about one o’clock today. We were just hoping that Ola [Brynhildsen] would’ve been ready and it turns out he wasn’t ready.”
TFC would begin the first half with a strong defensive limiting the visiting side to a limited number of shots and with keeper Sean Johnson upholding last weeks MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday nine starter honours
Charlie Sharp and Theo Corbeanu would put up a number of chances but nothing would break the deadlock.
Fraser’s side would come into the second half just as strong as they asserted themselves through the first 45 minutes, with Bernardeschi, Corbeanu, and Sharp finding promising finishes but unable to find the back of the net.
The visiting side would almost break the deadlock in the 53rd minute following a back heel pass in the box from Alonso Martinez to Hannes Wolf and Wolf’s shot seemingly destined to the back of the net going past Sean Johnson, would be cleared by Kosi Thompson on the goal-line.
Yet just eight minutes late NYFC would be an awarded a penalty kick following a foul on Martinez in the penalty area by Kosi Thompson. From 12 yards the Costa Rican forward would step up and convert it for his side sealing the the game and the three points on the road.
The Reds would continue to push past the windy weather and in search for the equalizing goal but NYFC would maintain a defensive hold and secure the one-goal win on the road at BMO Field.
“Disappointed because it was a game that I thought we could have won. And certainly, credit to New York,” Coach Fraser on the performance post game.
“They came in tough conditions, windy day and got out of here with a result. So, credit to them, but disappointment for us because I feel like it’s a game that we could have gotten more out of.”
The loss against New York City FC at home puts TFC in a tight spot as the Reds are set host four more home games over the next few weeks, starting with a Canadian rivals matchup against CF Montreal in the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship on Wednesday evening for the preliminary round match-up.
