North Toronto Nitros Add Former Valour Midfielder Jacob Carlos
Former Valour FC midfielder Jacob Carlos will be taking his next steps in League1 Ontario with the North Toronto Nitros.
The 21-year-old had made thirteen appearances for Valour last season, getting a sole assist in the lead-up to one of Sean Rea’s best-ever goals at home:
Carlos had initially arrived to IG Field on a U SPORTS contract last year after impressing on trial following his second round draft selection. Phillip Dos Santos liked his versatility, which saw him deployed both in the middle of the park and along the right flank, too.
The Mississauga-born midfielder had made eleven appearances for the Ryerson Rams before earning his current professional opportunity, with the midfielder bagging two goals and two assists for his university side in 2021. He had also spent time with the Toronto FC Academy in the 2018-2019 season, prior to switch he played abroad with Portuguese club Academico de Viseu F.C in 2017-18 and Swedish club IK Frej in 2016-17.
With Valour not bringing in the 21-year-old for another go, Carlos will now test himself in League1 Ontario pastures. The North Toronto Nitros had quite a strong season last year, where they rose from one of the bottom-table teams to qualify for playoffs in 2022. While a knockout bout with the Simcoe County Rovers ended the trophy hunt in front of a boisterous home crowd, this season will see the club enter with high expectations.
There’s been a growing number of Canadian Premier League youth talent landing in Ontario’s semi-professional level while they seek out new contract opportunities, with last month seeing no less than five former CPLers land in the circuit.
The 2023 League1 Ontario season will open on April 13, with defending champions Vaughan Azzurri hosting the North Toronto Nitros.
