NSL Winnipeg Set For Stadium News

The newest club in the Northern Super League is expected to reveal details on where it will call home on Tuesday.

With Winnipeg officially securing an NSL expansion team set to begin play in 2027, time is of the essence to get a stadium ready to host thousands of soccer fans by next spring.

A formal infrastructure announcement is now set for the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex on Tuesday, suggesting the multi-sport facility is in line for significant investment ahead of the 2027 NSL season.

The facility, which is operated by the Winnipeg Soccer Federation, has long been a hub for soccer in the city. Having been the location where Valour used to train, it has long been home to grassroots soccer development in addition to Prairies Premier League teams like FC Manitoba and Winnipeg Lucania FC.

Now it looks set to help host professional soccer, though the facility will need some adjustments for such a crowd.

At present, the complex’s biggest field can host about 2,000 fans, though one imagines Winnipeg’s Northern Super League team will want space for numbers north of that.

The provincial government has already committed a $750,000 toward a new outdoor pitch and lighting system following the conclusion of the 2026 Prairies Premier League season.

That leaves plenty to do before the Winnipeg NSL expansion launches next year, with the bulk of stadium details expected to be revealed on Tuesday.

We knew from day one that Princess Auto Stadium would be avoided, with Rob Gale having confirmed as much to Northern Tribune in a previous interview.

Gale previously coached Canadian Premier League side Valour FC, which calls the 30,000-plus capacity Princess Auto Stadium home. Having experienced firsthand how difficult it was to build an intimate atmosphere there, he knew from day one of his NSL venture that he wanted something different.

“We had some great, great fans, Valour, unbelievable in the one section, but it got lost in the bigger picture, even when we had the 10,000 fans,” reflected Gale. “So that’s the aim: central location, vibe, and great atmosphere to really feel a part of the action, which is what all sports fans want to do.”

Gale had told us back in May that the group was making big strides to secure that, and on Tuesday fans should expect to see the fruit of that labour.

It’s worth noting that the NSL’s push for an intimate venue could help clear a path for a Canadian Premier League side, too, with the men’s professional soccer league aiming for consecutive years of expansion in to-be-determined locations, though Quebec City and Kelowna are strong favourites on that front.

Tuesday’s announcement was called by Winnipeg South Centre MP Ben Carr and will see Manitoba Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Nellie Kennedy in attendance, along with Families Minister and Minister responsible for Accessibility and Gender Equity Nahanni Fontaine. Northern Super League President Christina Litz will also be on hand as Winnipeg prepares to launch in time for the 2027 NSL season.
