AFC Toronto Wins On The Road Against Halifax Tides
Following a Battle of Ontario win at York Lions Stadium on Thursday evening over Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto was back in action Tuesday evening and on the road visiting the East coast side Halifax Tides at Wanderers Grounds.
The resulting 1-0 win on the road marks Toronto’s fifth straight win in the Northern Super League.
The sole goal of the night comes from the debut of recent signing Lauren Rowe, who was subbed into the game and scored off the bench in the 79th minute that helped lift AFC to its fifth victory in a row and the three points on the road.
With the game being evenly contested throughout the whole hour mark, Halifax kept up with Toronto’s pace and applied pressure throughout that time. The winning goal came in near the 80th minute as midfielder Nikki Small would slot a perfectly timed ball to the off the bench debutant Rowe, who made no mistake on her finish nutmegging the Tides goalkeeper.
Rowe’s goal helps keep AFC Toronto atop of the table and have made the club the first side in the league to achieve five consecutive wins.
“It honestly didn’t feel real at first – being away, I didn’t hear much of a cheer but when my teammates came over to celebrate, it hit me.” Said Lauren Rowe on her debut goal. “ It was such a special moment.”
Lauren , age twenty, joined AFC Toronto during the international break from North Toronto Soccer, where she scored seven goals in ten games.
“I’m just so happy for her,” added Captain Emma Regan on Rowe’s debut. “Lauren has slotted in seamlessly – she works incredibly hard, and tonight she brought a spark off the bench. Fresh legs, defensive hustle, and then that finish. sShe played a huge role for us.”
Up next for AFC Toronto is to head back home to York Lions Stadium and take on Montreal Roses FC on Friday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. for their third meeting of the inaugural NSL season.
