With the Vancouver Whitecaps set for a trip to the Isle, there’s a clear buzz at Starlight Stadium.

Host side Pacific FC of the Canadian Premier League will welcome their Major League Soccer visitors next Wednesday. With tickets more than 75% sold out a week in advance, the team has worked in tandem with the city of Langford to add additional capacity for the CPL-vs-MLS clash.

The two clubs are meeting by virtue of the Canadian Championship, with the tasty semi-final knockout cup match a surefire highlight to professional soccer on the west coast.

The Whitecaps are the reigning champions of the tournament and have already defeated CPL opposition to reach this stage, while Pacific bested both Cavalry FC and semi-pro history makers TSS Rovers (based out of Burnaby) to arrive ninety minutes away from booking a spot in the cup final.

Fans don’t need long memories to remember Vancouver’s embarrassment the first time the Whitecaps came to Starlight two years ago: Pacific won the bout 4-3, with the MLS visitors sacking their head coach the following day.

While Pacific bowed out in the 2021 semi-finals against Toronto FC, they went on to win the North Star Shield – their league trophy – later on that season.

It’s a very different Whitecaps side visiting next week, and a very different Pacific FC, too: faces such as Lukas MacNaughton, Marco Bustos, and Alejandro Diaz have moved on, as has head coach Pa-Modou Kah.

The team is now led by the Isle’s own James Merriman, who has already equaled Kah’s win record after a thorough 4-1 dismantling of York United last week.

“We look forward to defending our Island pride in this rare meeting of two of BC’s professional clubs from different leagues,” added Pacific FC’s Managing Director, Paul Beirne. “Ticket sales have been brisk as we expect to host football fans from both side of the Strait of Georgia in this Battle for BC.”

Should Pacific provide another upset, they’ll advance to a final against either Forge FC or CF Montreal, depending on who takes the other half of the semi-final stage.

Starlight Stadium will have a plethora of food fare and matchday festivities to celebrate the big match. Interested fans can purchase tickets here.
