Canadian Premier League side Pacific FC has just announced the return of team captain Josh Heard, who will remain on the Isle for the 2024 CPL season.

The hometown hero has spent the last five seasons with The Tridents, contributing 19 goals and 10 assists through 96 appearances thus far.

The last season saw Heard succeed Jamar Dixon as the club’s captain, with the Victoria native bagging five goals and three assists as the club reached the playoff semi-final stage.

“It’s an extreme honour to be playing for my hometown professionally in front of my friends, family, old coaches,” said Heard, who will crack one hundred club appearances just four matches into the 2024 CPL season – his second as captain.

“There is added responsibility, I’m the leader out there and it is up to me for a lot of things and that’s a role I really like and it’s a role I thrive in,” adds the left winger. “There are definitely many different ways of being a leader, and I’m not necessarily the rah-rah Friday Night Lights guy before a game, but I’m a guy that shows up consistently and my approach is always there.”

While born in Cardiff, Heard moved from Wales to Canada when he was three when his family settling in Victoria. The fast-footed Tridents attacker developed his talents with the Lakehill Soccer Association, Victoria Metro, and the Victoria Highlanders before turning professional, featuring in the US and Austria before signing with Pacific in the summer of 2020.

Heard helped Pacific FC secure a league title in 2021, with the Tridents captain still keen to push for repeat success three seasons later.

There’ll be some roster shuffling from the Vancouver Isle-based club en route to any potential glory, however: Manny Aparicio has said his farewell, while it remains unclear if defensive stalwart Amer Didic will return.

While it looks like Trinidad and Tobago international Reon Moore will reinforce the club’s attack, much of the 2024 Pacific FC roster remains a mystery for now. Whatever shape it takes, Josh Heard will continue to lead from the left flank.

Pacific FC did not disclose the length or structure of Heard’s contract, simply stating that he will be back for 2024.
