Canadian Premier League side Pacific FC is adding Guatemalan international Marco Dominguez to its roster, signing him to a contract through 2025 with a club option for a further year.

Having been born in Canada, the defensive midfielder will count as a domestic athlete. He’s expected to be a high-caliber replacement for Aly Ndom, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last month.

Dominguez, 28, has tallied fifteen appearances for the Guatemala national team, most recently appearing for the side in a friendly loss against number-one ranked Argentina.

He’ll be eligible to play on July 5 when the transfer window opens, opening the door for a club debut against top-of-the-table Atletico Ottawa two days later

“Marco will be a significant addition to the squad, not only does he possess high quality football ability on the pitch, but he also demonstrates great character, leadership, and understands what it takes to win,” said Pacific FC’s Jamar Dixon. “He’s a player that will bring positive energy to the locker room and will share his experience with his teammates.”

The defensive midfielder was out-of-contract with Guatemalan side Municipal, with Pacific swooping in amidst ongoing negotiations this month. Dominguez has played in Guatemala since 2018, playing for Antigua GFC, Deportivo Mixco, and CSD Municipal, while also embarking on a loan to Kuwaiti club Al-Yarmouk SC in 2022.

Having tallied just about 185 professional appearances in Guatemala’s top flight, the 28-year-old will bring plenty of high-level experience with him to a new chapter at Starlight Stadium. This won’t be his first time playing in North America, though: born in Montreal, he starting his career with FC Montreal and spent a season with the USL-era FC Cincinnati in 2017.

Dominguez has also faced Canadian Premier League opposition before, too: he played against Forge in the club’s first-ever Concacaf League match back in 2019.

The Vancouver Isle side currently rest in fourth place, maintaining the best goals against record in the league. Dominguez will be expected to help with that, offering James Merriman plenty of flexibility in both defensive midfield and centre-back.
