Pacific Signs French Footballer Aly Ndom
We had surmised that Ligue 2 veteran Aly Ndom was headed to Canada, with the 27-year-old defensive midfielder now anchoring himself with Pacific FC on a two-year deal.
While Ndom most recently played with Finnish top flight side IFK Mariehamn – where he tallied 28 appearances – what he truly brings to the Isle is a plethora of Ligue 2 (and some Ligue 1) experience, having helped Reims earn promotion to France’s top level in the early beats of his career.
While Ndom has played a central and defensive midfielder, there were whispers that the left-footed Frenchman will actually be used as a successor to centre-back Amer Didic, who is likely headed to Norway’s top flight.
“We are excited to have Aly join the PFC family, he’s a player with lots of personality and great character,” added PFC Manager of Football Jamar Dixon. “He has an immense amount of experience and will help lead our backline.”
That’d be a bit of gamble positionally, though the CPL has seen success in similar cases – like when Forge midfielder Alexander Achinioti-Jonsson covered the CB position all season and ended up winning the league’s defender of the year award.
For now, however, Pacific still describes him as a midfielder, where he’ll be expected to be an indominable presence.
Pacific’s newest signing had worked his way through the Reims reserves to the first team, making 12 appearances in the top flight (and 71 overall) for the club before 2019 saw him loaned to Ligue 2 side Caen, though he moved to AJ Auxerre on a permanent transfer not long after.
Proving a regular with the side during its spell in Ligue 2, Ndom left for Romanian top flight side Chindia Targoviste – where Vancouver’s Mikael Cantave once played – at the end of his three-year deal with Auxerre, despite continued interest in France’s second tier.
The journeyman then moved to Italy’s Serie C with Viterbese, though he terminated his deal in a bid for gametime and certainly found it with Mariehamn. He helped them stave off relegation, with the 27-year-old now landing on Canada’s west coast.
The left-footed defensive midfielder arrives to Pacific FC as their second officially unveiled signing after Sean Melvin, though it looks like Dario Zanatta and Reon Moore are destined for the Isle too.
