Baldisimo Brothers Called Up To Philippine National Team

The Baldisimo Brothers might be taking to the pitch alongside one another on the national stage following their most recent call-up by the Philippine men’s national team.

Neither York United’s Matthew Baldisimo nor his San Jose Earthquakes-based brother Michael have suited up for the Philippines before, though both have accepted multiple call ups over the last two years.

Suffice to say, their potential national team debuts have been a long time coming.

The Azkals will take on Iraq in back-to-back World Cup qualification matches against Iraq, who will enter as firm favourites. The Philippines will play against Iraq away on March 21 before hosting the country at home five days later.

Matthew, 26, remains in Canada’s top flight with York United, where he’s tallied 19 appearances since joining from Pacific midway through 2022. The CPL original is hoping for an injury-free campaign this year which would also see him available for June’s World Cup qualification window, where the Philippines will take on Vietnam and Indonesia.

His younger brother Michael moved from the Whitecaps to San Jose last season, with the defensive-minded midfielder making thirteen appearances last year. He’s come off the bench one of San Jose’s first three matches of 2024, so a potential national team debut could prove to be a well-timed boost for the 23-year-old.

Both brothers have previously featured for Canada at the youth level and were born in Vancouver, where they’d progressed through the academy ranks of the Whitecaps to start their professional careers. With no senior team call-ups coming from Les Rouges, both now look set to embark on a new national team adventure through their Filipino heritage.
