Portland Timbers Taking Sean Rea For Test Drive

The Portland Timbers could be adding a fifth Canadian to the team sheet if all goes well in preseason.

Former CF Montreal midfielder Sean Rea is trialing with the side during the club’s preseason camp, which will begin in Arizona with a friendly bout against reigning USL champions Phoenix Rising FC.

Last season saw Rea enjoy a strong start at CF Montreal before falling out of favour with now-departed head coach Hernan Losada. The 21-year-old suited up 18 times for CF Montreal across all competitions after turning heads in subsequent loan spells in the Canadian Premier League.

It was there where Sean showed consistent looks at higher-level potential, tallying seven goals and thirteen(!) assists through the 2021 and 2022 CPL seasons. That amazing form led him to take home the league’s Best U-21 Canadian Player before returning to CF Montreal as a more-proven youth prospect last year, though things didn’t quite pan out for him at Stade Saputo.

We had surmised that Rea would get another shot at the MLS level following his release from CF Montreal, with Portland now set to test the youngster.

The Portland roster has seen an influx of Canadians added under Phil Neville this offseason, with a trio of former CF Montreal players in Maxime Crepeau, James Pantemis, and Kamal Miller all landing with the MLS side.

The roster also includes defender Zac McGraw, who made his Canadian national team debut at last year’s Gold Cup.

The Timbers will continue their preseason at the 2024 Coachella Valley Invitational following their time in Arizona, with matches coming against NYCFC, San Jose Earthquakes, and Chicago Fire.

If Neville opts to pass on Rea, we’ve no doubt a number of Canadian Premier League sides will come calling for the former Valour standout.
