Toronto FC is down in Charlotte for the club’s fifth road match of the MLS regular season.

This road trip against Charlotte FC also marks the team’s second matchup against the 2022 MLS expansion club this season. The Reds defeated Charlotte FC for their home opener at BMO Field earlier this season, with the win coming thanks to a world class goal from Italian DP Lorenzo Insigne, who is still sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

Toronto FC will have to brush off the recent loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps, where they allowed the Western Conference club to score two goals in each half as the Reds were shut out entirely, ending the five-match goalscoring streak.

The Reds will be down another player as the injury list continues to grow as centre back Shane O’Neill, who had started all seven of Toronto’s MLS game this 2024 season before being subbed off due to a injury in Saturday’s loss at BC Place.

Toronto FC is already without Italian star Lorenzo Insigne, fullback Richie Laryea, and midfielder Brandon Servania, while Raoul Petretta and Tyrese Spicer remain questionable to be able to play. Head coach John Herdman will definitely look for some action from fellow Italian DP Federico Bernardeschi, who has produced in past matchups against Charlotte.

Charlotte FC also head into this matchup on a loss after losing 1-0 at New England last week.

Both Toronto and Charlotte have had a issue of scoring this season: both teams currently sit tied for 25th place in offence, averaging a total of 0.86 goals a game.

The matchup will be one see if Coach Herdman’s side can regroup after back-to-back losses. A win down in Charlotte for the Reds will seal a sweep in the season series against Charlotte FC and give Herdman’s side a breathing room for the very much depleted and injured club.
