Sudbury Cyclones, Borough Both Promoted To L1O Championship

League1 Ontario’s second tier had two open positions that have now been filled by the Sudbury Cyclones and The Borough FC – two sides which just finished their inaugural campaigns down in the provincial third tier of League2 Ontario.

They take the place of division finalists Vaughan Azzurri B and Alliance United B, who both earned promotion but have opted to remain down in the third tier.

These two postseason promotions come after Pickering FC also launched unexpectedly upwards to the Championship by way of Scrosoppi B opting out of promotion following its promotion and relegation playoff win this year, setting a firm tone of B Teams preferring to stay in L2O.

The Sudbury Cyclones had looked like strong promotion contenders in their inaugural campaign before finishing just outside of a promotion spot, ending in third place after claiming 32 points from 14 matches in the Northeast Conference.

Scarborough’s The Borough had a much more tumultuous introduction despite some professional branding, finishing sixth out of eight after tallying just 15 points in 14 matches.

Both clubs will now be eligible to field a reserve side in League2 Ontario, which opens the opportunity for both the Cyclones and the Borough to field more players on the pitch come 2025.

“Moving up to the Championship Division opens a new chapter for the Sudbury Cyclones,” says owner Dario Zulich. “We’re excited to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with this step up.”

The club has already strengthened its coaching staff and will be hosting open trials in the new year, along with expanding its own player recruitment efforts ahead of the 2025 League1 Ontario Championship season.

While The Borough will face a tough challenge in making a competetive jump upwards, club owner Andrew Ornoch says the project is about more than just football as he aims to unite the Scarborough community behind the side.

“Competing at the League2 level was a great entry point,” adds Ornoch. “We’re proud of how our players, coaches, and staff adapted to the demands of League1 and showcased the potential of our club. We feel we’ve only scratched the surface.”
