Toronto FC Comeback Falls Short As Late Goal Gives Charlotte FC The Win

Toronto FC took to City for its fifth road match of the MLS season.

Down south, the Reds dropped the result 3-2, with both teams taking a win the 2024 series against each other.

Toronto FC showed resilience to come back twice away to Charlotte FC, but ultimately came up short as late 85th minute goal from Patrick Agyemang would give the hosts the three points.

The Reds improved from last week’s loss at BC Place offensively by scoring two goals, with both coming from Prince Owusu.

Owusu managed to first tie the game 1-1 in the 49th minute after coming into the game as a sub, knocking in a cross from Federico Bernardeschi into the net.

Owusu would find the net for the second time in the night in the 78th minute, knocking in a Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty cross to mark his third goal of the season.

But ultimately Owusu’s off-the-bench heroics would not be enough, as the Reds struggled from a defensive standpoint as the moments in lead up to Agyemang’s goal proved that a defensive problem is present. From leaving an unmarked Brecht Dejaegere on the right flank with open space and under no pressure to two Toronto defenders failing to get a block on the low cross, the problem seems to be evident and a pattern has emerged throughout three back-to-back losses.

In the absence of already injured centre back Shane O’Neill and fullback Richie Laryea, Toronto FC will be without a another centre back as defender Kevin Long was sent off in the second-half stoppage time for a second yellow card.

The Reds will be without him against next Saturday’s home game against New England, where they will look to win the series sweep against the New England Revolution as they have already beat them in their first outing 1-0 at Gillette Stadium earlier this season.

Following next Saturday’s fixture the Reds will then have to focus on some Canadian Championship preliminary round on April 23rd where they will go up against the Simcoe County Rivers.
