Veth: TFC2 Set To Add Valour Midfielder Matthew Catavolo
It sounds like Valour FC midfielder Matthew Catavolo will be taking his next steps in MLS NEXT Pro.
Manuel Veth is reporting that Toronto FC has acquired the 20-year-old Valour FC midfielder, who was on a multi-year deal in the Canadian Premier League. He will reportedly be sent to the Toronto FC 2, their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate.
Catavolo had been picked up by Valour last February after progressing through the CF Montreal Academy. He went on to make 17 appearances in his rookie campaign, all but one of which came off the bench under Phillip Dos Santos.
Catavolo was one of six Canadian Premier League youngsters to crack the Canada U-20 roster in the summer. He featured in all three of Canada’s group stage matches, contributing a double in a 4-0 win over St Kitts and Nevis before the young side went out on penalties against Honduras in the Round of 16.
Given that he is under contract with Valour, a potential move to Toronto FC would mean the Winnipeg-based side would likely fight for some kind of compensation.
This offseason saw the side lose out on star forward Moses Dyer, with midfielder Sean Rea no longer coming back on loan after breaking through at the MLS level. There’s been a hefty roster shuffle in the interim, with Catavolo seemingly coming as a late and unexpected departure.
Neither club has commented on the matter thus far.
