Former Atletico Ottawa striker Ruben Del Campo has returned to the Spanish lower tiers following his prolific season in the Canadian capital.

Spanish fourth division side UCAM Murcia CF has announced the arrival of the Swiss-Spanish striker on a two-year deal and could make his debut as soon as this weekend in a home match against Juventud Torremolinos.

Del Campo had been loosely linked with a move to South African side Kaiser Chiefs during his period of free agency.

The 24-year-old had spent two season with Atletico Ottawa, with the second being much more successful. After failing to score in sixteen of his matches in year one, Del Campo found a ‘sweet moment’ with the club last year and racked up fourteen goals across all competitions, finishing as a golden boot contender as he helped his side reach the playoff semi-finals.

The Freiburg-born striker’s last stint in Spain saw him in the third division with San Fernando CD, where a strong start of four goals in eleven matches was followed by an 18-match dry spell before he terminated his contract. The former Atletico Madrid youth prospect has also played for UD Melilla and CD Numancia, along with Portuguese side FC Famalicao.

Del Campo was one of the first players to post his farewells to Atletico Ottawa following the conclusion of the 2024 CPL season, which was head coach Carlos Gonzalez’s last at the helm. While he enjoyed his time in Canada’s top flight, his return home was motivated by a family decision.

“It’s my turn to say goodbye to the red and white colors once again, this time in Canada, Ottawa,” said Del Campo, referring to his time with the Atletico Madrid reserves. “I would like to thank both the club and the coaching staff for the trust placed in me during these two seasons. Especially this last season where I have grown professionally and personally.”

The capital city club is currently riding a Mexican wave as it prepares for the upcoming season, adding Diego Mejia as its head coach and strengthening its ties with Atletico San Luis. The club signed ASL appearance-leader Juan ‘Coque’ Castro, with Iker Moreno expected to follow and defensive midfielder Kevin Ortega considering a move between the two clubs a well.
