UPDATE: It’s now official: Valour’s home ground has been renamed Princess Auto Stadium.

It looks like Canadian Premier League side Valour FC will be calling their home ground by a new name come the 2024 CPL season.

Winnipeg Football Group – who own both the CPL’s Valour FC and CFL side Winnipeg Blue Bombers – are set to announce a new ten-year stadium sponsorship agreement that is set to be announced tomorrow afternoon, as per the Winnipeg Free Press.

This will mark the first change of sponsorship since the stadium – currently called IG Field – opened its gates in 2013, preceding Valour’s first match there by some six years. The 32,500-seat facility is the cavernous home to the Winnipeg-based club, which drew just north of 3,200 fans per match last season.

While spectator figures have taken a dip since the club’s inaugural season, WFG’s Wade Miller has urged fans for patience while Valour plans a path towards playoffs for what would be the first time in club history. If the club can start collecting wins, there is belief that the team could return to the numbers it saw in 2019.

Winnipeg Football Group is also spending about two million dollars to replace the entirety of the stadium’s turf pitch for the first time since its construction in 2013. The asphalt surrounding the pitch will also be replaced, with work taking place throughout the first half of the 2024 CPL season.

As a result, Valour’s home opener won’t come until Sunday, June 2 against Vancouver FC, the newcomers who leapfrogged Valour in league rankings last season. The Winnipeg-based side is undergoing a hefty roster overhaul, recently bringing in Australian forward Jordan Swibel while selling Pacifique Niyongabire to USL Championship side FC Tulsa.

Princess Auto already has a working relationship with Winnipeg Football Group, with the locally-owned tools and equipment company already sponsoring tailgate parties for the Blue Bombers.
