In one of the lesser-kept secrets of the CPL offseason is now out.

English defender Ibrahim Bakare has departed Vancouver FC, a move known to the club for months but only announced this week.

Bakare made 26 appearances throughout Vancouver’s inaugural campaign, featuring in their first-ever match and their final match of the the season, too. He departs second in the club for blocks, clearances, and duels won, and is tied fourth in all-time club appearances after year one.

“On behalf of everyone at VFC, I would like to extend a big thank you to Ibrahim for his contribution to our historic first season in the CPL,” said VFC boss Afshin Ghotbi. “We wish him monumental success and achievements in his future career.”

Much like his exit, his arrival to the Eagles had become known before it was formally announced. His playing spell in Canada was preceded by spells with League Two side Morecambe and the Cardiff City U-23 team, after which he featured for a few sides in the English lower leagues.

The Langley-based side has now loosed seventeen players who had been involved in its inaugural campaign, seven of which were shipped off before the season had ended. Head coach Afshin Ghotbi has brought in some intriguing signings like David Norman Jr, Paris Gee, Ben Fisk, and 15-year-old Grady McDonnell to compliment the returning athletes.

Bakare isn’t the only English footballer to leave the CPL this month, with Cavalry’s Ethan Beckford having signed for Havant and Waterlooville. Bakare’s next destination is unknown, but it is believed he had interest back in his native England.
