Just over one month after we reported that Ivan Mejia was training with Vancouver FC, the club has secured his signature through to the end of the season.

The Canadian-Colombian midfielder turns professional after having spent the last two season with League1 BC side TSS Rovers, where he helped win the league’s inaugural championship and helped them make Canadian Championship history this year, scoring in a three-nil win over Valour before a respectable defeat to Pacific.

“I have worked so hard for this moment and having it finally come through is a feeling I can’t describe,” said Mejia of the move. He arrives fresh off a League1 BC campaign that saw him score six goals, making 12 appearances in all. He’ll offer Ghotbi some flexibility with both central and left-sided positional sense.

“As we continue to improve the selection of our squad in hopes to qualify for the playoffs, we are thrilled to bring on Ivan Mejia,” said Vancouver FC gaffer Afshin Ghotbi. “He brings a tremendous amount of energy, pace and attacking qualities as a shifty, inverted winger, who will be able to provide goal-scoring opportunities.”

The 22-year-old got his start in Colombia with the Deportivo Cali Academy before his family moved to Canada. After enlisting with Mountain United FC and the Whitecaps Academy, he played in both the Fraser Valley Soccer League and the Vancouver Metro Soccer League before stints with FC Tigers, North Vancouver FC, and BB5 United.

“I’m so happy to sign my first professional contract with Vancouver FC,” adds Mejia. “I’m very thankful for the opportunity to play in my hometown with VFC and for management’s belief in me.”

At Vancouver FC, he’ll rejoin his former TSS Rovers teammate Anthony White, while also reuniting with some League1 BC familiars in James Cameron and Lennon Thompson.

The Canadian Premier League expansion side has undergone a hefty midseason roster overhaul as it seeks to rise up from the league table’s basement. Tomorrow will see Mejia made available against Valour FC, the club he’d scored against as a Rover.
