Another youngster for the books.

Canadian Premier League side Vancouver FC has announced yet another local signing, signing Squamish, BC native Joey Buchanan to development contract

The 16-year-old midfielder had attended the Open Trials that the Eagles hosted and has impressed enough to earn himself an invitation to the club’s professional environment.

“We are very proud to have identified a young, talented player from B.C. through our open trials for the second year in a row,” said VFC head coach Afshin Ghotbi.

“Finding players such as Joey proves that there are still many talented gems in the B.C. football community who need pathways, such as combines, to be discovered.”

Buchanan currently plies his trade with Burnaby FC, a recently-formed football club that arrived in 2023 with the merger of five local youth clubs.

Burnaby FC will start their inaugural year in League1 BC and become the new affiliate club for Vancouver FC and the league’s downward player movement project for this upcoming season.

Last year, when playing for one of the clubs that merged into Burnaby FC known as Mountain FC, he won both the B.C. provincial championship and the Under-17 boys national championship under head coach Todd May.

“Joey immediately showed personality, confidence, and a great presence as a central defender,” adds Ghotbi. “He also possesses the ability to participate in the build up and maintenance of possession football. We are looking forward to seeing his development throughout this season.”

On a developmental contract, Buchanan is able to train full time with Vancouver FC and can feature in up to three CPL games, whilst also maintaining his amateur status and place on Burnaby FC’s roster. Buchanan is eligible to sign two development contracts in a single CPL season.

The Eagles have recruited quite a large contingent of domestic U-21 signs this year, with Buchanan also the thirteenth B.C. signing of the season – reflecting a clear sporting philosophy for the team’s sophmore season.

The club will open its second season on Saturday at home against Valour FC in what will be a highly anticipated match for fans to really gauge how much this squad has improved.
