Last Piece Of The Puzzle: Vancouver FC Signs Niko Giantopolous

Vancouver FC has announced the signing of ex-York United ‘keeper Niko Giantsopolous to a one-year deal through 2024, with an option for 2025.

This official announcement comes after Giantsopolous was revealed to season ticket holders at the “Cherry Blossom” kit launch the night before.

β€œI am very excited to be continuing my career in the CPL with Vancouver,” said Giantsopoulos about joining his newest club. “I have built a competitive career in my native country and have worked alongside some of the best in the business. I’m ready to bring my skills to a young, exciting project in VFC and am looking forward to what this new opportunity holds.”

We had been tracking Niko’s off-season journey after he turned down multiple contract offers from York United, including his training stint with Cavalry FC earlier this year.

He follows in the footsteps of Paris Gee in coming from York United, where the 29-year-old spent three years with his home-town team, playing 55 times.

β€œWe are thrilled to bring depth, quality and experience to VFC with Niko,” said Afshin Ghotbi, Head Coach of Vancouver FC. β€œWe believe that with both Callum [Irving] and Niko manning our goal, we now have one of the strongest goalkeeping pairs in Canadian football.”

Giantsopolous was previously spotted training alongside Callum Irving in the Eagles’ 7-0 friendly win over Fraser Valley All-Stars, where he was on the bench.

The veteran CPL ‘keeper now becomes the eleventh offseason addition for Vancouver FC as The Eagles prep for their home-opener in just over a week.

With some massive signings already in their books, it seems like Giantsopolous was Vancouver’s last piece of the puzzle ahead of a massive year for them – one where they’ll be pushing for much more than just playoffs.
