It seems Niko Giantsopoulos likes to travel around!

In a preseason friendly on Wednesday against the Fraser Valley Soccer Leage (FVSL) All-Stars, the former York United goalkeeper was spotted warming up for Vancouver FC alongside Callum Irving.

This is after we spotted Giantsopoulos training with Cavalry FC during an offseason saga that saw the former Nine Stripes number one turn down multiple contract offers from York United, who eventually looked to Europe to secure his replacement.

There is no word yet on whether Giantsopoulos is expected to do more than just train with the team, but Vancouver FC is in need of a second goalkeeper and does have a few roster spots open.

It would not be surprising if the Langley-based club do sign Giantsopoulos given their recruitment strategy this off-season to have quality depth in almost all positions.

“I think now the only thing missing is to add a back-up goalkeeper, to have that depth in the position,” Vancouver FC Head Coach Afshin Ghotbi mentioned after the 7-0 win over FVSL All-Stars. “Once that’s done, there is also a player that we’re waiting on to bring back because his visa has not yet come in.”

There is also no indication on who that international player may be that is waiting on visa, but there were some other notable trialists on show in the match. Former WFC2 forward Gloire Amanda played some minutes alongside 2024 CPL Draftee Thomas Powell.

Veteran goalkeeper Giantsopoulos wouldn’t be the only Nine Stripes arrival should be join the club, with Paris Gee landing out west this January.

The 29-year-old had made 55 appearances for York United over the last three seasons, and had even undergone a one-game emergency loan to the Vancouver Whitecaps. Before that, Niko had also made ten appearances for Cavalry before his move to Ontario.

With only a few weeks left in the off-season for Vancouver FC, time will tell if they make any more major additions and if that includes Giantsopoulos fighting for top spot alongside Callum Irving.
