Vancouver FC has announced the signings of Sebastian Dzikowski and Thomas Powell to the club’s developmental roster for 2024. This comes after the update to the rules and regulation of the CPL, allowing clubs to allocate up to three three U-SPORTS slots in their roster to fill with their draft picks.

“We are very excited to offer U SPORT contracts for the second year in a row,” said Afshin Ghotbi, head coach of Vancouver FC. “These types of opportunities are important stepping stones in the development of Canada’s soccer landscape and we are very proud to provide these players with professional experience this season.”

Last year, Vancouver FC gave both of their draft picks plenty of play-time, including giving first overall pick Anthony White a standard contract, while extending second overall pick Ameer Kinani’s U-SPORTS contract until the end of the 2023 season.

Now, they will look to give similar opportunities to Powell and Dzikowski for the 2024 season.

Thomas Powell, 22, was selected 15th overall in this year’s CPL-U SPORTS Draft, coming from Trinity Western University (TWU) in British Columbia. The Coquitlam, BC native started in all 16 games for the Spartans, registering four goals and four assists. That fine form earned him a spot in Canada West (CW)’s First Team All-Star. Across his three seasons with TWU, Powell registered 10 goals and nine assists in 44 appearances.

“After three years at TWU, I am very excited to sign a professional contract with my hometown team,” said Powell on his signing. “I am looking forward to developing my skills in this professional environment and committed to doing what I can both on and off the field to help the club.”

Meanwhile, Sebastian Dzikowski was signed to a U-SORTS contract despite not being picked in the draft last December. He is still eligible for that contract due to his declaration for being drafted. Dzikowski, also 22, was lethal for University of British Columbia (UBC) last year. He scored 15 goals in Canada West regular season play, breaking the program’s previous single-season record set by Craig Chiasson in 1994 for most regular season goals.

He had an incredible scoring streak of at least one goal in 10 out of the 16 regular season games for his university. That performance earned the Calgary, Alberta native massive accolades, including the CW’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Year for 2023 and the Joe Johnson Memorial Trophy – an award that recognizes the U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Player of the Year for 2023.

“I am thrilled to be joining Vancouver FC for my first professional contract,” said Dzikowski. “I believe something very special is being built here and I can’t wait to develop my skills and contribute to the team. I am very excited to see how much I can grow as a footballer in this extraordinary environment.”

After also signing Niko Giantsopolous on the weekend, Vancouver FC will look to make good on their extensive recruitment as they host Valour FC next Saturday to open their 2024 CPL Season.
