Introducing The W Canadian Championship

At long last, women’s football in Canada has a national domestic cup competition to call its own.

Today, Canada Soccer has announced the inaugural edition of the W Canadian Championship, set to kickoff this summer featuring all six Northern Super League clubs and two from the semi-pro ranks of Premier Soccer Leagues Canada.

The inaugural tournament will feature three knockout rounds starting with a quarter-final stage set to run August through to October, with the semi-final and final stages taking place in the first half of 2027.

All six Northern Super League sides will compete, along with Quebecois semi-pro side CS- Mont-Royale Outremont and the Ontario Premier League powerhouse Simcoe County Rovers.

For the moment, it’s not known if future iterations of the tournament will feature the champions of various provincial semi-pro leagues, or if academy sides like Rise FC Academy or Calgary Wild U-23 would be permitted. In that instance.

The competition will kick off on August 3 with the Halifax Tides hosting Ottawa Rapid, with the historic match set to air on TSN+ and the NSL’s YouTube channel.

Bizarrely, this match will count as both the W Canadian Championship match and a regular season Northern Super League match, presumably just to shoehorn it in the schedule.

Fans can then see our first intra-league competitive game as Calgary Wild hosts CS Mont-Royal Outremont, with the venue being changed to ATCO Field for the occasion, while also giving new Wild coach Leah Blayney a chance to make history.

Montreal Roses will then get a different kind taste of Quebec-versus-Ontario action as they hit the Simcoe County Rovers on August 12.

We then have an awkwardly long wait for the fourth quarter-final match, with AFC Toronto and Vancouver Rise playing on October 4 – a tantalizing clash between last year’s NSL regular season champions and the playoff winners.

There’s a big caveat here: evidently having some scheduling difficulties, this match will also count for the NSL league match between the two, which – like the Halifax and Ottawa game- makes things bizarre and confusing when it comes to disciplinary measures, stat tracking, and if the game goes to extra time.

Scheduling headache aside, its been an astounding week for women’s football in Canada, with the Northern Super League expanding to Winnipeg with the expectation that the new side will kick off in 2027.

The winner of the tournament will be given a berth for the Concacaf W Champions Cup set to kick off on July 2027, whereupon their performances could lead to a FIFA Women’s Club World Cup berth, too.

It’s unclear how the timing of next year’s tournament would take shape, or if future versions will be split between calendar years too.

Club are permitted to select up to 35 different players across the three rounds of play, giving some flexibility as rosters change between rounds. Once a player has been listed on a club’s 20-player matchday lineup, however, of the tournament – so if they make an intra-league transfer following the ’26 NSL season, they won’t be able to feature in the later rounds for their new side come 2027.

More information to come as it becomes available.
