The Halifax Wanderers are adding some Brazilian flair to midfield following the retirement of club talisman Joao Morelli.

The Canadian Premier League side now adds Brazilian attacking midfielder Vitor Dias, who has put pen to paper on a two-year deal in Halifax.

The 25-year-old arrives with over 2,000 minutes of MLS NEXT Pro experience to his name, having been part of St. Louis City SC 2’s inaugural roster in 2022 and the Sporting Kansas City SC II setup in 2023. He tallied seven goals and three assists between them both before moving north of the border.

“Vitor is a very well-known player in the U.S. after his incredible college career at Marshall and offers us a technical, left-footer in the midfield,” says Wanderers boss Patrice Gheisar on the new signing. “He’s going to come in and quickly get acclimated to the league and our group and be a big help to our returning squad.”

The aforementioned time at Marshall University saw him lead the Thundering Herd in scoring en route to a 2020 NCAA National Championship, cracking the First Team All-American squad and USA Male Athlete of the Year.

He was selected by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the subsequent MLS SuperDraft, but opted to sign with St. Louis City SC 2 – where former CPL full-back Kwame Awuah still plays – to start his professional career in North America.

The Brazilian midfielder’s youth career started back home at Sao Paulo FC, with a brief stint at Boavista SC preceding his time in the United States with Marshall University.

“I haven’t been this excited for a season in a while,” said Dias himself. “I can’t wait to get started with Halifax in a very competitive league. I saw that this team fills the whole stadium, and I can’t wait to get playing in that atmosphere.”

The five-foot-ten midfielder describing himself as an athlete who brings plenty of creativity and confidence to the pitch, which certainly sounds like someone who will fit in under Patrice Gheisar’s foot-forward attacking mentality.

The 25-year-old fills just the third international roster spot on the squad, with Lorenzo Callegari and Andre Rampersaud being the others. The club recently added defender Kareem Sow, midfielder Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare, and attacker Ryan Telfer to the mix.
