York United striker Austin Ricci is off to a hot start in preseason, recording three goals in just as many games.

The forward has added his name to the scoresheet against CS Saint-Laurent, Vaughan, and Toronto FC II ahead of his fourth season with York United.

Ricci’s first of the trio came against Ligue1 Quebec champions CS St-Laurent, who will be squaring up against pro competition in the Canadian Championship this season.

The Nine Stripes recorded a hearty victory over them at the Ontario Soccer Centre, with Ricci catching the goalkeeper out and scoring an absolutely unbelievable goal from his own half:

His next goal was an absolute touch of honey to dink the ball over the goalkeeper in a friendly against League1 Ontario powerhouse Vaughan Azzurri, with the striker showing plenty of confidence to take on that first-touch finish.

York United fans will have enjoyed seeing Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy tear down the wing before crossing a nice ball in, given that his debut season was cut short through injury last year.

Austin’s fine form continued against Toronto FC II, where the 27-year-old put on another clinic and scored his third in just as many preseason matches. Heading the ball down to himself, he takes a slick touch with his right boot to make space from the defender, squaring himself up for a tidy left-footed finish against the MLS NEXT Pro side.

It’s also worth noting that Reshaun Walkes is still training with the side, as he joins Ricci in celebrating the goal against his former side.

The striker had his option renewed this year despite a relatively quiet campaign in 2023, tallying four goals in 28 appearances – one of which came as an out-of-the-box rocket against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The season prior saw him miss nearly all of the season after he re-aggravated a knee injury from his Valour days. That initial knee injury had curtailed what was a breakthrough season from Ricci in 2021, with the striker procuring eight goals in 18 appearances for Valour that year before it occurred.

The Richmond Hill native seems to always brings a big physical presence and a high energy level with him on the pitch. Should he continue with his fine form when the season unfolds, the York United attack line could be quiet potent – especially if Osaze De Rosario rediscovers his double-digit form.

Returning with them up top is Brian Wright and Theo Afework, with Molham Babouli capable of playing an attacking role as well – though York has played the Syrian international quite deep on the pitch when needed.
