Soumaoro Set To Face Morocco In Africa Cup Of Nations Qualifier
York United defensive midfielder Brem Soumaoro is set for a high-profile Africa Cup of Nations qualification clash against Morocco followed by a friendly match against Ghana.
The Liberian international, 27, has featured in all but two matches for York United this season. The imposing six-foot-one defensive midfielder has fit in well at the CPL level, even scoring one of the better long shots in CPL history.
It’s been some time since the defensive midfielder – who can also play as a centre-back – has featured for Liberia, having last done so in a friendly loss to Egypt last September. In all, he’s made ten appearances for his home country, six of which came as World Cup qualifiers.
Soumaoro’s Liberia are in for a tough tilt against Morocco, who ventured deep in the 2022 World Cup and beat Canada 2-1 in the group stage. Liberia had lost their previous group match against Morocco, and are already mathematically eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations.
All the same, it’ll be a great opportunity for the York United standout to impress against a high-profile opponent, after which he’ll travel with the team to Accra to play a friendly match against another high-profile opponent in Ghana.
This means that Brem will miss this Friday’s home match against Valour, though he’ll be back for a tough tilt against Pacific on September 17.
He isn’t the only Canadian Premier League athlete called up this window, with Forge’s Garven Metusala and Halifax’s Andre Rampersad also set for national team duty.
