York United Doubles Down On Draft Picks To Sign Jason Hartill

Canadian Premier League side York United has now locked in both of its CPL-U SPORTS Draft picks after confirming the arrival of Jason Hartill on a U SPORTS contract.

The Cape Breton University standout, 20, once plied his trade with the TFC Academy before enjoying a championship-winning season out east with the Capers, where head coach Deano Morley heralded Hartill as a rookie on the rise who was highly skilled, brave, and not afraid to take responsibility.

While Hartill hails just west of Ottawa, the Carleton Place-born midfielder will call York Lions Stadium home for the 2024 CPL season. The youngster had impressed head coach Martin Nash during the side’s preseason trip to Mexico, now joining Christian Zeppieri and Trivine Esprit on U SPORTS contracts.

“Jason has been a big part of our squad so far and you can already see his growth and development since he arrived for preseason,” says Nash of the new addition.

“He’s a strong presence in midfield and is neat, tidy and technical. But what’s equally important is attitude, mentality and strength of character. Jason possesses all of those things and we look forward to seeing what he can do for us this season.”

The move comes in the first season that Canada’s top flight won’t count U SPORTS athletes towards a club’s primary 23-man roster, with teams permitted to use a maximum of three development roster spots on U SPORTS athletes. Martin Nash has now made full use of his.

The timing of the 20-year-old’s arrival suggests he’ll be on the matchday squad for York United‘s match out west against Pacific FC tonight. The Nine Stripes sit four points back of tonight’s hosts, who are undefeated in league play – though York’s last league outing showed they can be a dangerous side when fit.
