Player Loan Swap Between York And Halifax Sees Giraldo and Bayiha Change Places

Canadian Premier League sides York United FC and Halifax Wanderers have committed to an intriguing loan-swap that sees two midfielders change places for 2024.

The Wanderers are sending central midfielder Tomas Giraldo to the Nine Stripes with an option to buy at any time during the loan period, while winger Clement Bayiha will be loaned the other away.

Clement Bayiha will don blue after having impressed in his inaugural CPL campaign, with the former CF Montreal winger procuring two goals and three assists in 30 appearances last season. He featured in York United’s first four league games and notched another assist, but hadn’t been on the team sheet in the last three matches.

For head coach Patrice Gheisar, the Quebecois winger arrives as a missing element to an attack that has yet to click in 2024.

“Clement has incredible pace and the ability to provide the service that we need as we continue trying to be dangerous and score more goals,” says the Halifax boss. “He also has a great familiarity with the way we want to play as well as with players in this team; He was roommates with Julian Dunn in Norway and with Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare at York.”

Known for his pace on the wing, the 25-year-old is in intriguing intra-league loanee for has also tallied 25 Major League Soccer appearances before his time in the CPL.

Tomas Giraldo will head on loan the other. Like Bayiha, he’s also in the midst of his second CPL season. 2023 saw him tally 20 appearances and score two goals, with the former CF Montreal Academy midfielder only getting four minutes of game time this season.

“This is an exciting move for us,” says YUFC President and General Manager Ricardo Pasquel. “Tomas is a great acquisition and is a flexible addition to our midfield. He’s a young player with so much potential and we look forward to his contributions this season.”

The 21-year-old is a former Canada U-17 prospect, giving the nine Stripes another option in a central midfielder role. With an option to buy at anytime throughout the 2024 CPL season, it’ll be interesting to see if he continues to catch the eye of new ownership.

The player loan swap comes amidst interesting times for both clubs: the Wanderers change will spark a rise up from the table’s basement, while York United rest in fifth place but are in the midst of a head coach turnover.

The two sides clashed on Friday, though nether Clement Bayiha or Tomas Giraldo were part of the festivities.
