Having contested for a roster spot through all of York United’s offseason, Canadian defender Nyal Higgins has now officially signed on a one-year deal that includes a club option to extend his stay beyond 2024.

The 26-year-old defender is no stranger to Canadian Premier League circles: in fact, he’s previously played for both Atletico Ottawa and FC Edmonton, with York United now becoming his third stop in Canada’s top flight.

The centre-back arrives to York Lions Stadium with 33 appearances for CPL sides already in his pocket, with the former MLS SuperDraft pick having trained with the likes of Sporting Kansas City, Columbus Crew, Nashville, and Toronto FC, the latter of whom previously rostered him with their reserve side.

“He’s a capable, composed centre-back and reads the game well,” says Nash of the team’s newest recruit. “He brings plenty of experience and knowledge of the league and he’s an excellent addition for us. He’ll play a vital role this season.”

The vote of confidence suggests that Nyal will be hefty contender for minutes alongside other new defenders like Oswaldo Leon and Frank Sturing, with the Nine Stripes having undergone a near-total defensive overhaul this offseason.

The Ajax native most recently plied his trade with League1 Ontario outlet Vaughan Azzurri, having also played in the USL and Sweden in the earlier stages of his career.

With Higgins having impressed by slotting in ‘effortlessly’ in a preseason camp that saw a shored-up York United defense, it’ll be interesting to see if he can make an immediate impact this weekend.
