York United club original Roger Thompson has re-signed with the club on a one-year deal with a club option for a further year.

The 31-year-old centreback has made 44 appearances for the Nine Stripes throughout the last for seasons, with injuries somewhat hampering his influences throughout three full campaigns with an iron man campaign occurring in 2020.

The club’s first year under Martin Nash saw Thompson take to the pitch on 15 occasions, with Thompson grabbing his first goal for the club in a Canadian Championship quarter-final clash against Pacific:

The veteran defender had been out-of-contract after December, with Club President Angus McNab stating today that it was great to have ‘Big Rog’ back.

“He cares about football in the GTA and frankly has made it known he wants to win something here as this is his home,” said McNab. “I love that it matters so much to him. We do need to work with Rog and find a routine that ensures he’s fit and available for selection as he knows the travel and turf we play on means we need to manage him carefully.”

Nine Stripes gaffer Martin Nash described him as a top centre-back in the league who helps the club both on and off the pitch.

“He’s got some excellent qualities as a player: he’s a calm presence, reads the game exceptionally well, and possesses a real composure on the ball. His ability to play an intelligent pass from deep is a real bonus and last year we saw on a number of occasions just how much of a potent weapon that is.”

The Nine Stripes now have nineteen players signed on for the 2023 CPL season, through this figure includes Ronan Kratt, who is expected to meet his sale conditions with Werder Bremen.

The club will be looking to bring in another centre-back to compliment Thompson, especially given that both Dominick Zator and occasional CB fill-in Jordan Wilson have both departed.

It also remains to be seen if Michael Petrasso will return, with the midfielder having been seeking a potential move to Europe in the offseason.
