York United Set To Bring In Two CF Monterrey Youth Prospects
The new York United owners aren’t wasting time when it comes to bringing the Nine Stripes talent native to their home country.
After bringing in a former Expansion MX coach Jorge Villalpando as their technical and sporting director and signing Mexican centre-back Oswaldo Leon, we’ve learned that the club is now set to bring in two U-23 international players who both hail from the CF Monterrey U-23 team: Orlando Botello and Josue Martinez.
22-year-old central midfielder Orlando Botello will arrive to York Lions Stadium having featured nine times for the Rayados U-23 selection, before which he served with their affiliate Expansion MX side Raya2 Expansion.
Despite clocking in at just 22 years old, Botello has tallied over 100 appearances split between the youth sides of Liga MX teams and first teams in Expansion MX, having also featured for Mexico up to the U-18 level.
Second midfield arrival Josue Martinez is a longtime CF Monterrey academy product who has progressed through the youth levels all the way to the U-23 level, having also spent a season with their now-dissolved Expansion MX affiliate Raya2 Expansion.
He made fifty appearances in Mexico’s second tier, where the club used him as both a central and defensive midfielder. That could see him fill a role similar to Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare, who will be headed back to Halifax.
Martinez won the Concacaf U-17 Boys Championship with Mexico, featuring in all seven of their tournament matches before making three appearances at the U-18 level.
The CPL side has not yet commented on the signing of the two Mexican midfielders, who would be taking their first steps abroad at the club level with York United.
The two players will both occupy U-23 international roster spots, with the club already having Oswaldo Leon (24), Dennis Salanovic (27), and Brem Soumaro (27) on the roster. There’s still some big roster spot questions for the Nine Stripes, like the status of their number one goalkeeper and goalscoring hero Kevin Dos Santos.
The 2024 Canadian Premier League season will see York United kick off the campaign away to Atletico Ottawa on April 13.
