Canadian Premier League side York United FC is bringing in 16-year-old winger Shola Jimoh on an Exceptional Young Talent contract.

The deal runs for three years with a club option for 2027.

The teenage talent was one of two academy products to sign a development deal last year, though he wouldn’t crack any matchday rosters in 2023.

He impressed during the club’s preseason trip in Mexico, however, with the club now adding Jimoh shortly ahead of his sixteenth birthday.

“Shola is such a phenomenal talent,” says Ricardo Pasquel, YUFC General Manager and President.

“Along with an impressive skillset and technical ability, he’s got a terrific attitude and spirit. He’s a local kid with so much upside and it’s our responsibility to not only consistently find these players in our communities and neighbourhoods but give them the best chance of success by investing in them. We’re thrilled to bring him on board officially and we believe in him. He has the potential to go far and we’re here to try and facilitate that.”

Prior to his time with the United Football Academy last year, Jimoh turned heads at the Toronto FC Academy.

It looks like teenage goalkeeper Michael Williams will remain a club record holder as the youngest Nine Stripes athlete to ever ride the bench.

Jimoh has also made four appearances for Canada at the U-15 level and has been training with the York United first team regularly this season.

It was only last week when the Halifax Wanderers signed a Sheffield United prospect of the same contract type.

Players signed to an Exceptional Youth Talent roster spot are placed outside of the core 23-man roster and are eligible to remain in the. Category through to the age of 21. Jimoh’s deal could run through to 2027.

New head coach Benjamin Mora was hired on the philosophy that he brings out the best in local talent, so it’ll be interesting to watch how Jimoh progresses under the former Atlas boss.
