Canadian Premier League side Atletico Ottawa has now confirmed that defender Zachary Roy will be staying put in the nation’s capital.

This will mark the 20-year-old’s third season with the club, with Roy putting pen to paper on a contract that runs through 2024 with a club option for a further year.

The Saint Bruno, Quebec native made just three appearances at left-back for the side last season, though he made fourteen appearances across all competitions back in 2022, when head coach Carlos Gonzalez utilized him on the opposite right flank.

It’s unclear what the plan is for the youngster this season, though any minutes he tallies will still contribute to the club’s required allotment of 2,000 given to domestic U-21 athletes.

Atletico Ottawa CEO Fernando Lopez describes Roy as a player with plenty of room for growth, so it’ll be interesting to see if he gets good competitive minutes to develop.

“I’m so happy to be back here, back home,” said Roy on his extension. “This will be my third year with the club now and it’s a club and city with who I feel really at home and happy. It’s a big year for me and I’m committed to giving everything.”

“Preseason has been fantastic so far, it’s really competitive but the group we have get along well off the pitch too. There are a lot of francophone players which is great. We’re all working really hard to make this a great season.”

It’s unclear what roster decisions have been made on a few other players who were with the club in Mexico, like CF Montreal U-23 trialist Loic Cloutier, club original Malcolm Shaw, or star CPL defender Amer Didic.
