New interim head coach Mauro Biello gets his first chance to coach the men’s national team and put his mark and show he is up to the task.

In a press release, Biello made the following statement in regard to the roster he will take to Niigata to play Japan on Friday, October 13th:

“I am excited about this roster as there is a good mix of experience and young talent that will allow us to compete against a very good opponent,” he opened. “This is an opportunity to bring our group together and build on our cohesion and tactical discipline. Japan will be a great test for us as we prepare for the Concacaf Nations League Quarter-final in November.”

Biello named a lot of regulars that we had seen in the past like Milan Borjan, Dayne St Claire, Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, and Cyle Larin, but also named some new faces like CF Montreal Mathieu Choinere.

Canada most recently faced Japan before the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, beating them 2-1 in Dubai, and has a 1-0-2 record against them.

“For me, the philosophy is the process we have used in the past, and taking into account experience, the opponent, and in terms of the squad I am quite happy and they are excited to come in and be part of this camp.”

Canada will be using this camp and friendly to prepare for the Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals which begin in November and will serve as a qualifier for CONMEBOL Copa America 2024.

“It’s important to have that cohesion and that clarity and to give an opportunity to some new players, and to find a balance to be ready going into November.”

Most notably, Tajon Buchanan was not named to the roster due to an injury he suffered playing with his club Club Brugge in Belgium.

Biello confirmed everybody should arrive in Japan by Tuesday and they will be practicing on that Tuesday, meaning they will only have three days to practice before the game on Friday.

He was asked how he felt getting ready to coach his first game as the main gaffer and he seemed pretty excited.

“It’s a great honor to be part of this team and I feel very privileged to be able to coach our national team, so I am very happy and I am very excited to get things going against Japan.”
