Canadian defender Dan Nimick was always going to be a hot commodity when his Halifax Wanderers contract expired, with perennial CPL powerhouse Forge eventually landing the big defender on multi-year deal.

His time out east saw him step up into a big leadership role with Halifax, where he earned a defender of the year nomination and made an incredible 21 goal contributions in his 54 appearances in blue.

His transfer to Forge evidently stung some Halifax fans, who went online to criticize the defender’s tougher sophomore season and his move to Hamilton. Amidst all that, former Wanderers midfielder Callum Watson stepped in to defend Nimick’s move.

“Get over yourself,” the midfielder told one critical fan online. “He’s bettering himself as a player and took a step up. Thank him for the goals and the memories he’s given you, and stop being salty.”

Watson and Nimick had played alongside eachother back in 2023, helping head coach Patrice Gheisar crack a playoff spot in his first year as a professional coach. After his club option was automatically triggered, Watson would transfer to Chattanooga FC at the end of the season.

Nimick has spoken fondly of his time in Halifax following his move to Hamilton:

“I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better first two years as a professional,” said the defender. “The environment of the club in Halifax is incredible, the atmosphere in the stadium, the way you’re welcomed in the stadium is amazing.”

While there will clearly be some dissenting voices when the defender does eventually don orange back at Wanderers Grounds, it’s clear the defender enjoyed his time in Halifax before making the move to Forge.

Nimick is currently with his new side ahead of what will be his first-ever continental match. Forge will host CF Monterrey on February 5, with the away leg coming one week later on February 11.
