League1 Canada Women’s Review: Week 17

By on August 8, 2025 0 1851 Views

We are nearing the end of the League1 Canada season on the women’s side. All four provincial titles have now been settled. There are just seven matches left in the season, four of which will occur in Alberta at the League1 Canada Inter-Provincial Championship.

Here is Northern Tribune’s final complete roundup of the weekly results on the women’s side. The men’s recap can be found here.

League1 Alberta: Blizzard Retains Crown

Things went to the final day in League1 Alberta, as the title was decided on Friday. The reason this was so was due to Calgary Foothills’ 8-0 win over Calgary Rangers on Tuesday. Kendall Showers and Avril Jamieson both scored braces for the hosts as they jumped in front in the league standings.

That led to Friday night’s key match as the Calgary Blizzard took on the Calgary Villains. It would be Bryn Mortensen who played hero for the guests, scoring a goal in each half to give her side a 2-0 lead. The Villians did not give up though, as Ayanna Reid Garvey got one back at the death. In the end, it was not enough for the hosts to spoil the Blizzard’s party. They held on for a 2-1 success to win the title.

The last match of the season ended in a resounding 9-1 St. Albert Impact defeat of Callies United. Three different players had doubles for the home team, who completed their season on a high note.

The Blizzard managed to claim the title at the expense of the Foothills, who finished two points back. They and the Impact ended up well ahead of the rest of the pack. The Blizzard will also be Alberta’s representative at the League1 Canada Interprovincial Championship, which occurs Friday and Sunday.

League1 Ontario: Drama at Both Ends of the Table

Also coming to a close last week were the league campaigns in Ontario. League titles, promotion, and relegation were all on the line. Here is a look back at how things transpired across the province.

League1 Ontario Premier: Rovers the New Champion

The Premier Division concluded its regular season with six matches. Simcoe County Rovers played the first of their two games on Wednesday with a 4-0 win at Waterloo United. An Ally Rowe hattrick lifted her side to three points and on the cusp of top honours.

North Toronto Nitros did their job on Friday night to keep the title race going another day. They topped Alliance United 3-1 at home, relegating the same team they defeated in the cup final the week prior. Ashley Campbell scored twice to give her side hope, albeit for 24 hours.

That led to Saturday night’s contest, as the Rovers returned to the pitch to face Vaughan Azzurri. Taking a 2-0 lead at the half, the hosts stormed through the second 45, finding the back of the net three more times. Rowe ended up with a second hattrick in a matter of days as the Rovers stormed to a 5-0 win and the league crown.

That result spelled bad news for NDC Ontario, who also played on Saturday night. Despite knowing they could no longer defend their title, they were involved in a thrilling 4-3 loss to FC London. After the visitors went 2-0 up early on, the hosts turned things around to take a 3-2 advantage with seven minutes left. However, London scored two more goals at the death to grab the victory.

North Mississauga and Woodbridge Strikers drew 2-2 in Saturday’s other game. The league campaign ended on Monday, with Guelph United edging Waterloo United 2-1 thanks to an Esmeralda Torres strike seven minutes from time.

Simcoe has become the new Premier Division champions, and will go on to represent the league in the Interprovincial Championship. They will face the League1 BC winners Altitude in the semifinals. North Toronto and NDC just miss out, but can be proud to be part of such a thrilling title race that went to the wire.

Alliance has been relegated to the Championship Division for 2026, while FC London will play in a relegation/promotion playoff to try and stay in the top flight.

League1 Ontario Championship: Scrosoppi Snatches Promotion

It was also a dramatic end to the title in League1 Championship. Wednesday had a single match, as Oakville SC edged Hamilton United Elite 1-0 at McMaster University. Alena Spehar got the lone goal at the half hour mark of the contest in what was a huge result for both teams.

Hamilton was back on the pitch on Saturday. This time, things went their way, in a 5-0 defeat of Unionville Milliken. Chiamaka Omeze netted a hattrick as part of the win to guarantee her side a top two finish.

The victory by Hamilton caused two dead rubbers on Sunday. In the first one, Burlington SC topped Whitby FC 3-2 in a dramatic match. The hosts went up 3-0, but were pegged back near the end, barely managing to hold on. Oakville scored once in each half to beat Tecumseh 2-0 at home to conclude their season.

Perhaps fittingly, the league’s final game decided the title and the top two spots. Pickering FC took a lead against Scrosoppi thanks to Hollie Braut. Six minutes later, the guests responded. Scrosoppi, who needed a win to take top spot at Hamilton’s expense, got their winner four minutes from time via Yasmin Castillo.

The top six teams finished within six points of each other in what was an incredibly competitive league season. In the end, Scrosoppi claimed top spot and promotion to the Premier Division. Wednesday’s loss ultimately cost Hamilton first place, as they will now face FC London on Friday to determine the last spot in next year’s top division.

League2 Ontario: Woodbridge B Claims Division

The League2 Ontario playoffs occurred last week as well. Tuesday had both semifinals. At RIM Park, Waterloo B topped Alliance B 4-0. A pair of goals in both halves did the trick for the Southwest Conference winners as they advanced to the final in convincing fashion.

The other semifinal was closer, as Woodbridge B got past Railway City 2-1. The visitors took the lead 19 minutes in from Lily Rider, but that lasted a mere seven minutes. Tamara Lisser responded for the hosts to tie things up. Olivia Pillitteri notched the winner shortly past the hour mark to send her team through.

The final was play on Sunday as Waterloo B hosted Woodbridge B in the battle of the conference champions. Three minutes after the away side went in front, the game changed as Shalagh Guha received a straight red card. From there, it was all Woodbridge B as they scored three more times to prevail 4-0.

The victory means Woodbridge B won League2 Ontario, and could have opted for promotion to the Championship Division. However, they rejected the offer. As a result, Railway City will face Cambridge United on Sunday to decide who will claim promotion to the second division.

Ligue1 Quebec: Playoff Week Produces Drama

Playoffs also occurred in Ligue1 and Ligue2 Quebec after a thrilling regular season. Not everything has been decided though. Here is a look back at the action.

Ligue1 Quebec: CSMRO Defends League Crown

The top division in Quebec had semifinals on Tuesday and Wednesday. CS Mont-Royal Outremont faced Academie CF Montreal in a repeat of the previous year’s final. As was the case in 2024, it was Les Griffons who managed to come out on top. Rachel Vermaire scored the lone goal just before halftime in a 1-0 win.

The other semifinal ended 2-1 in FC Laval’s favour over Royal Select Beauport. Rosalie Dumont put the Group A winners in front 27 minutes in. Lea-Jeanne Fortier tied things up 10 minutes after the break, but Sierra Jansen found a winner for her side in the 79th minute to advance to the final.

Sunday’s final saw FC Laval and CSMRO meet for the third time this season. This time, things went the way of the Group A runners up. Vermaire found the back of the net twice in the first half to put her side two to the good. Laurie-Ann Moise grabbed one back for FCL, but it was not enough. Shayla He added a third at the hour mark to give Les Griffons a second straight title.

CSMRO advances to the Interprovincial Championship, where they face Calgary Blizzard in the semifinals.

Ligue2 Quebec: Brossard Makes Final

The playoffs for Ligue2 Quebec also started on Wednesday, as AS Brossard faced CS Trois-Rivieres. The home team took the lead six minutes before the interval through Meira Guipro-Lebel. Anne Chapados tied things up after the break to ultimately force a penalty shootout. It was Brossard who would come out winners, prevailing 4-2 in the shootout.

The other semifinal between CS Trident and CS St-Laurent, which was originally set to take place on Wednesday, was postponed. At the time of writing, the league has not communicated why this occurred, or when the match will take place. For now, we will have to wait a bit before knowing who will face Brossard in the final.
